I need to ship a watch from the USA to Germany for a repair and service. Was going to use secursus but they only ensure watch that are sold. They won't ensure it if you are sending a watch for a repair thought that odd. Anyone knows of one that easy shipping insurance for a watch getting sent for a repair. Might take a chance without insurance.

Is that in Secursus terms? Or something they have told you direct?

Here their email to me.
Hello Mike,

Thank you for reaching out!

Unfortunately, our insurance policy only covers items that are sold/purchased. I’m afraid we won’t be able to cover your watch as you’re sending it for repairs and service.

Should you need more information, please let me know.

I guess you can lie and say you are selling it to your watchmaker, but I don't pull that kind of shit.

The watch is worthless in its condition and parts are rare as hens' teeth only place is this watchmaker in Germany who is expert on Hanharts and has the parts so maybe worth the risk shipping it without insurance just do the fastest possible shipping for less risk. But 30 bucks cheap for insurance for the value of the watch knew it was too good to be true. That what their calculator said it would cost if I was selling the watch.

The last time I shipped a watch to Germany for repair, I used DHL and third-party insurance that I purchased through my local shipping store. The shipping went smoothly, so I didn't need to make a claim.

However, the watchmaker did need to pay import duty on the declared value, which he passed on to me. I guess if the watch has no value, there may be no customs duty; but then what is the insurance value? This is the problem with market value vs replacement value.

In principle, you can get a form from US Customs to confirm that the watch is being sent for repair. The purpose of that form is actually to avoid paying full customs duty when the watch returns to the US (you only pay duty on the increase in value from the work performed), but it might also help on the German side, but no guarantees on that. At that time it was required to visit a customs office in-person to get the form, and it seemed like a huge hassle to me so I took my chances and got burned for a few hundred USD.

Insurance value doesn't have to equal customs value - they are two different things, for exactly this scenario.

Details will be different depending on the countries and what their policies are, but any watch shipped for servicing should have a customs value of zero, and the insurance should be the market value of the watch. Some countries will require the watchmaker to prepare a declaration on the incoming shipment that it is only being imported temporarily, and will be sent back. Some countries will insist you pay the duties and taxes up front, just in case you don't send it back. But when you do, you should be able to claim the money back by providing proof that the watch was indeed shipped back to the owner, so your watchmaker should have been able to claim that back from their government.

When the watch is shipped back to the owner, the insured value is again the market value of the watch, and the customs value is the value added while it was out of the country, so the value of the repairs performed.

Actually, this comment jogged my memory. I now recall that the watchmaker mentioned this as a possibility, but wasn't keen on doing it, since he claimed he had experienced problems recouping duties in the past. Maybe the OP will have better luck with this.

Governments usually don't make them giving money back easy. 😀

The watchmaker wanted me to put a 100 dollar value on it so he doesn’t get dinged when he receives the watch for repair. But said you can insure it for the real value with private insurance. Can that be done. Or can the sender pay the customs first so the watchmaker doesn’t get stuck with the bill.

Depending on the carrier, you can opt to have the sender or receiver cover customs.

Does that mean you could also use this as a shipping insurance in case of a sale? I still haven't been able to find a solution for shipping my watch across Europe, other than Secursus, which has quite some negative reviews

Well shipped it FedEx without insurance. It made it to Germany without a problem. Just took a chance really had no choice they just don't ensure watches and insurance just might make the thief's take notice. Might be a cheap repair the watchmaker already got back to me.
