Servicing a vintage speedy

Would you send in your vintage speedy for servicing? I'd be afraid of them changing the hands, dial, polishing... Even if instructed not to.
Ive heard of mistake happening so for this reason I wouldn't bring it to omega. Only a trusted watchmaker that would do exactly what I want.

Yes, that is the general advise around here.

Another question, my 76 speedy runs at - 4,-5 spd. Hasn't been serviced in over 20yrs. Is it worth sending it in at this point?

No, you only need a service if the timekeeping is off. Personally, this would be +- 30 sec/day. Others are more picky. My Swiss-trained watchmaker will fully service a 321 or 861 for $350 here in Sacramento.

I guess up to 10spd is pretty decent for a vintage. Plus, my 80 yr old watchmaker has very shaky hands so I would have to find another trustworthy watchmaker.

I agree but you missed the part of not being serviced in 20 years.

And so I won't start a separate thread, how about the hesalite... Will replacing it with a new one affect the watches value?

That's an estimate based on what the seller told me. He's had it for 14 years and the original owner doesn't remember when it was serviced.
So it may be longer than that. All I know is the previous owner barely wore it since he has over 40 watches.

that movement is probably drier than hell by now... at least the parts won't be heavily worn if the owner didn't use it much

Yes, after 20 years it's due for a service if you plan to use it. If it's just going into the safe as an investment then don't bother.

I'm sorry but your reply is totally irresponsible.
Any watch that has not been serviced in 20 years needs looking at as soon as possible, regardless of how well it keeps time.
I wouldn't go near your watchmaker with a barge pole either.

oops, I'm getting myself in trouble again. Yes, I agree - if 20 years since last service, a fresh service is in order.

Does servicing a vintage speedy affect its value?
It depends who does the service And what YOU instruct him/her to do !!!!

use a competent, omega certified watchmaker who has an Omega parts account, and you should be fine

there are a million previous threads on this

I would ONLY want the movement serviced. Cleaning and oiling. That's all.
