Nope, no method to the madness. Most of the old school watchmakers would scratch a date or a job number and maybe initials. This provides somewhat of a repair history. You can see how many marks and sometimes recognize the watchmaker. I recently did a watch for ulack and was able to tell him about the watchmaker who serviced it over 30 years ago.
Nowadays the Swiss frown on those scratches and use a sharpie to write coded numbers in the back. Whenever it is serviced the older info is removed.
