Seiko service on an old one

I picked this up today pawn shopping. Paid 60. Everything on it runs.
Movement reads 6602-8050


General question: should the date be adjustable on its own or is the only way to adjust it by sending it around the hours twice for each day ( right now I can’t seem to adjust the date alone)

Looks like Seiko wants 290 to service this watch. The crystal looks a bit worn. A general service I’m sure is in order.
Anyone recommend a 3rd party for this. 290 seems steep.

Nice find, I really like it. Especially with the bracelet. This movement may have a semi-quickset date, where you can advance the date by going back about four hours and than advancing again past midnight.

I'm not sure what currency "290" refers to, but I'm not sure how much less you can expect to pay for a decent service in most locations.

Nice watch - I have two identical 6602-8050s and a very similar 66-8050 and the movements are all reliable and worth the price of a service although not necessarily by Seiko although you don’t mention where you are or which currency.

If you post where you live someone should be able to recommend a local watchmaker.

The date advance is the traditional wind to just past midnight so the date changes, wind back to 8, wind forward to 12, and repeat.

I’m in Texas (USA). Im not against sending it to Seiko. In fact I’m normally a factory service kinda guy. Just didn’t think it would run 300 bones. I will likely send it off and see how it looks on the return. Any idea on a year of production on this one ?

Cool hack on the date window.

Just didn’t think it would run 300 bones.

I've come across this a number of times and had to explain to owners.
The time, effort, knowledge, equipment and consumables required to perform a service are about the same for any watch, be it a Seiko or a "higher brand" with an equivalent movement.

My rate for a mechanical automatic is AUD$350, or about USD$250, so I don't see the Seiko price as exorbitant.

You have scored a very nice example and it deserves some TLC.

Does anyone know what I seiko will do with the vintageness of this watch ? The hands and dial ?

I have paid 1600 or so for my omega but that was replacing a lot of stuff.

Also 1000 at Iwc but these watches were not as “old”.

I def am not opposed to 250. Just wondering what they will likely do for that ?

After looking at mine a bit it’s really not bad. The crystal surfaces scratches are very minor and the rest is just a polish job. It’s keeping excellent time and the date hack you all suggested worked. Had to go counter clockwise then 9 o’clock to 12 o’clock would change each date. It’s pretty audible when it clicks. I like it. I can also hear it ticking pretty good when I put my ear to it. It’s cool in my opinion. The bracelet rocks.

I started my seiko process and was amazed to see so many people talking about how piss poor the service was. Anyone have any recent dealings with seiko service or recommendations on a place that will do this watch right ?
