Your example is much nicer than mine - would look great!
Just got this one...SKX031..Clicky bezel, screw in crown, applied hour plots...Loving the Rolex look of it..
Unfortunately not mine, but was struck by how modern this 6138-3002 looks when I finished it. Big watch too being a jumbo. Must get around to sorting my UFO one day...
Mesh bands do add a mechanistic vibe, sort of Metropolis like. The tubular ends compliment the rounded ends of the lugs and straight edge of the case.
I put one, a cheap but well made Chinese copy, on one of my Quartz watches but found it irritated my wrist after awhile. My Midlands had a mesh band when I got it but I put a copy of a Spiedel expansion band on it at first opportunity.
Still like the looks of them even If i can't wear them.
I wear a few watches with mesh bracelets and I quite like them - don't really irritate me, fortunately. I popped this ROWI mesh on as it arrived without anything and dead...
This will get him going while he thinks about what he wants and, they are not expensive. I like the look but possibly something a bit heavier might work better. Anyone know what was on these originally?
Here’s my latest contribution
Seiko # 3. The spaceship has landed- direct from Miyazaki!!! Seiko Speedtimer
6139-7020 off the ‘Bay for $500. Love the warm champagne dial and the whole layout period. The orange and yellow hands really play up the sporty genre too.
The one thing that’s throwing me off - is this: If this JDM dial version of the Seiko 613-600x came out after, say 1975 - wouldn’t the movement be a 6139B
( versus the 6139A inside ) ???
The date code on the watch shows Feb of 71
Feb of 71 would be a resist dial and case, the first of the non-notched case, and one of the last 6139a movements.
It reads as OK to me, minus the dial. I am using this as a guide for it
It does seem to read via that website that the dial is post 75. But that might take more research it is a suwa dial though which might help you drill it down more. It is possible that this one has a later dial on it. My guess is that the low price you paid for it, is a sign that the Seiko collectors identified the later dial as not being original to the piece.. either way you got a good deal IMHO, and you can hunt for the correct dial.
Foo2, awesome job! Thank you in spades. I wish I knew this going in. Sorta a newbie tax I guess. I had read that Col. Pogue/ Springbar article too ( after the buy).... but I was sidetracked on the movement aspect. —Not the dial .ouch!
( as you ably pointed out and dated to Feb. 1971). So it’s the most probable that it’s the dial that’s off . I’m not terribly upset ( but wished I knew prior) ... If I ever sell it, I’ll def disclose that. My fault for not ascertaining properly.
Oh well, it still looks amazing in spites of the flaws.
It should be a fishbone design like this (credit to TheWatchSpotBlog):
Looks like I've become a Sumo fiddler..
Many thanks @adi4 - that certainly looks impressive. Not sure why I couldn't find that information so your help is much appreciated. I think the mesh will be coming off as I just ordered one of these (I know this model is not listed but it has 19mm lugs and my risk is small).
Will post a picture when it is back together and am sure my customer will be thrilled.
From what I’m seeing ( so far ) on the SCWF ( Seiko citizens watch forum ) and a few sites where watchmakers were either expertly restoring a similar 6139-7020 or selling one- it seems that this dial variant “7040T”; the champagne dial on my JDM Speedtimer is legit. Looks like the notched case and the 6139A movement and case date of Feb 71 all line up.. There’s also a comprehensive listing ( with pics of course)of the myriad models of the 6139-x on a Spanish site
“ foroderejoles.es” which clearly depicts mine.. feeling better - but will still dig around.
Both are sexy. The black is gorgeous!!
Its more of dark brown.
Do you prefer having the “presage” on the dial?
6 one way half dozen the other. Anyone that cares about presage knows they are the same quality. I think it’s cleaner without but it’s also nice to have it on the dial. Does that make sense?
