Seiko Presage watches

I recently checked out prices on Seiko Presage watches, and was startled. They’re priced much higher than I am accustomed to seeing Seiko watches sell for. Yet the movements in them appear to be bog stock Miyota movements! It appears to me that these are simply tarted up, fancier versions of typical Seiko watches. Does the window dressing really justify prices that are approximately double the price of orchard run Seikos? Nothing evident that indicates the movements are at all special. Comments?

The movements are Seiko, not Miyota (Citizen).
While they are a level above the Seiko Sports line, the case/dial/bracelet is more refined.
The movements (generally 4R35) are an upgrade to the 7S26 series, with the addition of hacking and hand winding. They are robust and reliable movements. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Basic Presage models are still sub AUD$1000.

You may have seen the next level up, the Craftsmanship series. These use a caliber 6R24 and are more refined than the basic line.

I’ve never compared Seiko and Miyota mechanical movements. But superficially, they look a lot alike. Thanks @JimInOz for clearing that up. I’ve only ever had my hands on one Presage Seiko, and that was to answer a question for the owner about it being a bit erratic. Had I paid more attention, I might have noticed the manual winding and the hacking. I’ve seen these Presage models in store windows, and they appear to start at about $750.00 (Cdn.) It seems to me these models are aimed at the market for some of the mid-range Swiss models which seem to be at higher prices.

I have owned several Seiko Presage models (and still have one). They are nicer than the standard Seiko’s (better dials, better case finishing). While the movements are a step up in quality, just be aware they still are not chronometer grade — mine have all kept pretty lousy time (in the range of +- 20 sec/day. Seiko relay should work to make these more accurate out of the box for the prices they are charging. The bracelets are also still pretty bad, IMO, and don’t match the quality for the rest of the watch.

One other point — never pay retail for any Seiko, even the Presage line. They can be had at a significant discount from online sellers.
