Seamaster references explained

Hi everyone,
I've seen Seamaster reference 2849, but also 2849-SC1, up until 2849-SC9. Does anyone know the background of these codes? Are they in chronological order, starting with 2849 up until 2849-SC9? Are they related to a time period or something else?

And does the same count for Constellation references, e.g. 14393, and 14393-2, etc?
It may be a very basic question but I didn't manage to find it here on the forum.

Thanks for your help!
Yves

Effectively yes they are chronological, but don’t necessarily correspond to a year. More a production batch or sub reference, which is then succeeded by the next and so on.

Note that they don't necessarily look similar by the way. A 2846-1 can have many different configurations. The "SC" stands for "seconde centrale", central second.

Also, in some instances, the sub-reference can refer to the year the watch was produced, eg. -61 meaning it's a 1961 example.

But not always. My 105.003-65 was produced in ‘67.

In fact I find even when the number seems to specify a year, the bulk of production is generally the year after. E.g. for a -63, more often than not most examples were produced in ‘64 at the earliest. It seems to me the -63 relates to the year the sub reference was designed, signed off, commissioned etc.

And don’t we love Omega for this. 😁

Have the same! My Seamaster 300 has two references; 14755-62 / 165014-62, but the Omega extract shows it was delivered in 1964
