Hi guys

I have been looking for at beefy lugs, solid gold watch for a while now, and now this showed up. It was listed at an auction, solid 14K.
I went to see the watch in person, and I quite liked it. I placed a bid, and won the auction. The auction was online, so I can return the watch within 14 days.

I have a couple of questions:

I cannot figure out if if the patina is "normal" or if it has come from an attempt to clean the dial?

Do you think the word seamaster has been repainted?

What would you have paid for the watch?

All the best, and thanks in advance.

Please post sharp photos. And you will probably get more engagement around value if you indicate what you paid. Why play the "what would you pay" game? Obviously, most collectors would not bid at all because of the splotchy dial.

Ok ok. I have not picked it up yet, so these photos are the best I have for now.
I paid 1100USD for it, and I live in Europe btw.
I wear my watches, and I find that all marks on them tell a story, so it’s ok. If they were too perfect I don’t think that I would be able to wear them.

$1100 is maybe $100-$200 more than scrap value for 14k gold from a gold buyer, so financially you're not in bad shape. Personally, I wouldn't buy this watch because I personally find the dial unappealing, and I have little interest in buying watches for their gold value. Who knows, maybe some other members will just love it!

I'm not sure what wearing your watches has to do with a splotchy dial. Wearing a watch doesn't generally cause damage to the dial, so the comment makes no sense to me. It seems to me that you might get even more joy from wearing a watch with a more appealing dial. But the only thing that matters is that you like it.

I cannot comment on the patina. Most of the time it comes from some kind of water intrusion, but not always.

No, “Seamaster” looks right to me. However, Omega didn’t always use the name on the dial and in some cases, the name was added later by Omega.

$1,100 for a solid gold vintage Seamaster is a pretty good buy IMO.

So, they added “seamaster” when the watch was serviced or? That’s a fun detail.

Thanks for taking your time to reply. I guess what I mean is that these vintage pieces are not exactly waterproof, and a rare pristine dial would be more at risk than in a modern watch case. But you are right, of course the dial does not normally take tale damage while being worn.

No. It may have been added by an importer.

oh, that's an interesting fact. I'd thought they just distribute and sell.

Btw, I picked up the watch today. I think it is better than anticipated. Keeping time so far. The lugs are still pretty sharp, backside crisp and seamaster and waterproof totally visible. It might be a keeper. Although I can see why the dial could be a dealbreaker for some. Now, some polywatch😃
