Hi all,

First time posting here—I'm watch nerd with a newly-acquired Seamaster inherited from my grandfather (my first Omega!). Can anyone tell me anything about this?

Welcome - and what a nice heirloom. 166.032 should be the ref, I believe, and this seems to be an 18k model that's been looked out for, judging by how well it's preserved. They started building these in the late 60s, movement should be a cal. 752.

Damn, I was about to say that it was gold-capped - you do not see many of these in solid gold in this condition 🥰

Someone on here likes the chronometer-rated versions...

Hehe, that picture is mean - @fossilhominoid dont let this make you think it’s not a special watch, it very much is. 😀

Hallmarks at the back of the lugs and generally a gold case back - I’m not aware of these having gold case backs when they’re “only” gold capped. Might be 14k instead of 18k, I’m not sure if these exist.

@ConElPueblo are you sure that solid gold?

I see what looks like a hallmark… but look at the lugs again.

I was/am hoping that’s just unfortunate reflections…

That's gold-capped.

EDIT: Maybe a replacement steel back?

100% sure.

There are two separate characteristics that make it so. Don't let the poor colours throw you off 😀

I’m guessing the dual hallmarks and the caseback matching the lugs?
The hallmark seems more like an import stamp then a gold proof mark.

unless I’m missing something. I don’t doubt you at all just trying to learn.

No worries. The gold hallmarks are in two positions which they should be (1 and 5 o'clock lugs here), but the second tell here is the caseback medallion; on steel cases the medallion will have a "Seamaster" script on top and an Omega logo at the bottom, while the gold ones have "Waterproof" instead of the logo as seen here.

Wow, you guys are absolute savants. Yep, there are two hallmarks.

It helps to read through to older threads on this message board; this is a reference that there is a lot of love for around here.

I'll be frank and say that value-wise, your grandfather should of course have purchased a much cheaper, boring Rolex and watched that appreciate like there was no tomorrow, but what would the fun be in that? 😉

The movement in this one is a cal. 752 which is a great movement and capable of good time-keeping (and it looks fantastic). Since your watch is 36mm and for the era very modernly styled, it will wear great and won't look out of place on a wrist today. If you are looking to keep it, get it serviced by a competent watchmaker and buy a good quality leather strap for it. Very, very nice watch.

Or go fully over the top and put it on a gold bracelet. 😁
