·First off, thanks for this site in general it really helped with my search for and purchase of a vintage Omega.
I found this watch via eBay and also saw it pop up on the "Recommended Vintage Omega Watches" thread. While I really want a new speedmaster, my plan is to wait until next year and this was a holdover watch. At the same time, I feel like I needed/wanted a nice evening/dinner watch.
After purchasing the watch off eBay, I unfortunately noticed it would get stuck occasionally and so a service was needed. I fully expected this anyways as it seems like it hadn't been worn in a while and came from an estate per the eBay description. I first took it to an Omega Boutique just to see if what they thought of it and their prices for a service. They recommended a jeweler/watchmaker store only a few blocks away that worked on vintage watches. If you're in the DC area, DM and I can let you know where I went. The watchmaker sent me a video of it after he opened it up, mentioned there was a little bit of rust around the stem but not throughout luckily.
While it did cost $400, and took about 6 or 7 weeks, I'm happy to report its back and working nicely. A hobby watch friend I know put it on his timegraph and it was about +6 seconds with the dial up, so happy with the results. Overall I went with this for the hippocampus on the back and the 14k case. I'm a fan of this version versus the presentation back, which took a while to find it. I'm also a fan of the linen dial. Sometimes I wish it was a date version but I'm glad I stuck with this cleaner looking no date version.
From the serial, what I can tell is it was made around 1963, caliber 550, 14k case. I ended up getting a strap from StrapsCo and also what I assume a fake-ish Omega buckle from eBay as well. I'm not a fan of the quick release spring bars so put some normal ones on. Also if anyone needs a 18mm gold omega buckle, let me know as I didn't realize I actually needed a 16mm one...
It's definitely interesting to think about where this watch could have been since 1963. Overall I'm pleased with it and glad I could snag it.
Thanks for having this website, I was able to read through a number of threads to see what I should be looking for and glad I found this wealth of knowledge.
