Looks like an original dial to me. It's certainly the correct S in Seamaster.

The caliber 355 is a bumper and it has the date window at 6. The watch pictured in your post has a 503 full rotor most likely.

The crown is incorrect - it should be a clover crown. They're easily found. Even I have one laying around. They cost about $35 give or take a bit. You should be able to recoup that and then some by selling that decagon crown. Constellation owners would fight over it.

I guess the back of the case is throwing me off a little. I would expect it to either have the Seamaster Icon in the middle of the case or Seamaster and Waterproof engraved on the back.

When I look on Ebay at the different versions of this watch, the 354/5's have this type of back case. The 503's have a different type of back case. Could a 354/5 case back fit onto a 503 case without causing a problem with the movement?

Could be a franken. We need some shots of the internals to be sure.

Also depends on the year. The Hippocampus appeared about 1958

Here is a 500 from 1956, plain back.

another thought. Didnt Dennison in the UK also made cases for these, and these were smoothback (no logo), they were also popular for engravings (grad gifts, retirement presents etc).

really need pictures of the inside caseback and movement to be sure though

A good thing to know if it is a Swiss case is to look for the gold stamps underneath the lugs. And I see two in this case on the lugs, so it is a swiss case. Is it 14 k for the gold looks yellowish ?

I checked on the ones I have, the 18 k gold one has the same dial and a Seamaster logo, the gold-on-steel one hasen't but the dial is different in that the index are much thiner. Anyway the case back on the one pictured is different.
