ive had my eye on this for a few weeks, but I know that black dials are often touched up. I’ve had a look at the surface of the dial through a magnifying glass and it looks right to me. Just wondering if you guys can pick any red flags up before I buy it. I’ve tried to get pictures in different light, so there’s quite a few. Black dials seem to be particularly hard to photograph as each spec of dust on the crystal shows. As always, thanks for any comments given.
Badly refinished, run away! There is no lume but there Ts, SWISS MADE lettering too widely spaced, the figures have been polished and have lost their crispness.
Quick question for future reference. You mentioned that there’s T’s either side of Swiss Made but no lume. Do T’s mean that there should be lume on the hands?
On watches c.1963 onwards (up to the 90's), 't Swiss Made t' indicated tritium lume, so there should be lume at the hour markers and on the hands. I believe XJR was referring to the dial not the hands though. The hands do have cut outs for lume, although it is missing in places. Confusingly some 70's Geneves had lume but no 't'.
For me the obvious tells here are: The overall thickness (too thick) and quality of the print. Text is far too white. Minute hashes are poorly done. Look at the 12 to 1 minute markers. They are crooked and uneven. You don't see that on an original dial. The condition of the hour markers.
Yes I have to agree, I guess I wanted it to be right a bit too much as it is pretty cheap. Now I know why. Whilst you are on line, I have one other that I’ve had my eye on. I’ll post it on another thread, if you could cast your eye over it, that would be great. Much appreciated! Chris
First off, it is a redial. A shitty one to boot. Don Draper syndrome strikes again! Second, look at the different colors of the plating on the movement's bridges. It's a franken as well. Overall, this is an obvious pass. I mean on the watch, but not for our OP - he fails today's quiz.
OP = Original Poster (as in thread starter) or Original Post (as in first post in the thread). Just busting your stones a little. We like when new members ask before they buy. Saves everyone some hassle and hard feelings.
Haha got you. Yeah, I’m pretty new to this but I’ve looked at literally hundreds of vintage omegas, mainly on line. Still can’t see the woods for the trees. But I’m learning
Good catch! That spacing does look really strange. But the fact that it says that with no lume anywhere is a giveaway.
That one you posted has got black paint splashed all over the hour markers, which a real black dial obviously should not have. Always blow the image up as far as you can.
If you are looking for your first omega I would recommend you keep a close watch on the private sales forum here. You are less likely to get burnt and not everything is hugely expensive.
