Scratched bezel insert

Unfortunately they (NYC) would not help me. They would only service the watch for $700 and then allow me to buy the part with the service for $280.

Learn from my mistake kids, put tape on your watch when playing with the tools
That is pretty harsh. Do you want me to check with my Boutique here and see if they will order one for me?

A spring-bar tool is usually used from the back side of the watch. So even if one slips, the damage is generally confined to the backs of the lugs. However, bezel inserts are extremely prone to damage from everyday use, so you are in good company in sporting a scratched insert.

Another way around the issue...keep, and look at the scratch and remember the FU?
Who cares in 50 years?
It is still your watch, and your scar??

And keep an eye out on eBay and other sites - I’m sure one will come up at a reasonable price in time.

Too bad that the bezel here isn’t the tungsten carbide that Omega used for the Globemaster. That thing is so hard that you can’t scratch it.

That’s really kind of you to offer, thank you! I think I found an AD in my local watch group who is going to go above and beyond for me. She’s going to give it to me at wholesale, assuming she can get it from omega. But if that falls through, I’d be grateful!

I made a stupid mistake yesterday. While changing straps on my 2531.80, I accidentally scratched the bezel with the spring bar removal tool. It feels extra annoying because the strap switch was to save the bracelet from scratches, which are actually super removable unlike what I just did.

Any remedies people recommend? A new bezel insert from Omega is $280 and it doesn't feel right putting a fake one on. They mentioned the new ones are not original to what shipped with the watch, but I imagine that doesn't matter. I also imagine this bezel insert is not original either since the bezel has some deeper dings that could not have sparred the insert.

Out of curiosity, how the h*** did you scratch the bezel with the tool when changing the strap? I put the watch face (and bezel) down and manipulate the spring bars from the back. I could see scratching the case back from a slip, but can’t for the life of me see how one would scratch the bezel.

Regarding bezel inserts, don’t buy any of the ones on eBay - they are almost certainly fake, since Omega has never sold inserts separately, just the entire bezel assembly. Depending on when you last had the watch serviced, it might be worth it to have the watch serviced and a new bezel put on. They will also clean up scratches on the bracelet.

You can find them on eBay, you just have to filter to ‘used’ and have an idea what you’re looking for.

People who’ve had their watches serviced by Omega and had their bezels replaced often sel the returned bezels on eBay. Obviously in a lot of cases the bezels are knackered but you can find ones where it’s the bezel ring itself that’s worn and the actual insert is ok.

Home made springbar tool from bronze brazing rod, it wont scratch stainless steel, but maybe aluminium?

Same here. Trying to picture how someone can change the bracket while holding the watch.

From the front as well. A strap or something I could see trying to change from the front, but not the bracelet

But if you must know, I believe I tried to get the rubber strap on from the top of the lugs (front side) because I was having trouble the other way? Not totally sure, but I lifted the watch up to get an angle and in a split second lost control of it all, tried to catch it and in doing so the tool caught the front side

It's a curiosity situation. And it's a small scratch, it'll get more.

But I do know how much that first one hurts your very soul.

I'm sorry to hear you accidentally scratched your bezel. I've struggled changing my bracelet in the past, mostly because of physical issues. For that reason, I bring my watches to my nearby Omega Boutique and AD who are more than willing to swap out my bracelets or straps at no charge. That might be a good option for you in the future. I hope you're able to have your local AD install a new bezel. Best of luck to you.

Heck the guy that resized my brand new bracelet at the boutique scratched up some links, so anyone can make a mistake. Or several.
