Sapphire Sandwich

I know why the moonwatch is nicknamed sapphire sandwich. What I’m hoping to find out is why it’s applied exclusively to the moonwatch with crystals both sides. Was it because it was the first watch to do this? Genuine question and thought I’d ask the experts!

The moonwatch has hesalite and a closed steel back. Sapphire sandwich is a Speedmaster.

Noted. Same question still holds though. Why apply to this watch?

What do you mean? Sapphire sandwich is just a nickname to differentiate it from the standard / less expensive moonwatch.

It’s just a nickname. Lots of watches earn them. Look around and you’ll see Hulks, Batmen, Holy Grails, Pepsis, Cokes, Ed Whites, Ultramen, and even Coins.

Maybe that’s it - just for differentiation I guess nothing more than that. Obviously lots of other watches have sapphires front and back so the same could apply, but I guess none have a hesalite version.

I get it’s a nickname. Just wondered why apply to speedmaster only. That’s all.

It was probably one of the first and might still be the only watch that has 2 versions of a closed caseback hesalite or a sapphire top with a display caseback. I can't really think of any other watch model that has this. In order to differentiate, people just called it Sapphire Sandwich since there was no other watch like it at the time and the name stuck.
