This is so true. Unfortunately, these days perceptions matter and it's all about the "optics". One may have worked hard and saved up for years to get that Rolex, which one may appreciate because of design, engineering, history etc but the media and general public perceive it as representing elitism, exclusivity and being out of touch with the "working man".

Some years ago we had a political leader who had a Ferrari, back then it wasn’t worth all that much, probably about the same as a top of the line locally made car, much was made of this by the media and his opposite number, who had a large collection of antique French clocks.
‘Ol mates clock collection was probably worth as much as the car, but no one gave him shit about his elitist collection or his $$$ Zegna suits. Neither of these pricks in anyway could be realistically compared to the working man but it’s just an example of double standards to which the sensational media applies attention.

I think I know who you're talking about. The guy with the French clocks was Prime Minister for a few years in the 1990s, and used to call himself the "Placido Domingo" of Australian politics 😁

Yeah that’s him, I was trying to keep politics out of it, the other bloke was the leader of the opposition at the time
