Note to self. If a billionaire hands you a watch, it’s probably not a fake.

Impression is more important than reality. Know how to read your audience, especially if you’re going into public “service”.

Jokes aside, I get it. Not a good look. But also, it's her business what she spends her money on. There's a difference between out of touch in the public opinion, even getting impeached for it, and getting your door rammed down by police searching for your legally owned property. Assuming the watches are all copacetic. It's pretty wild.

Not really, not when your salary might be considered "peanuts" over here ... in a country where people are starving living on an average of FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS a month.

So, yeah, not really in this case, ESPECIALLY when she is the Minister of Social Reform.

That blue strap is a crime with that uniform.

Would be a huge improvement if he swapped it out for a black one as it's a bit more discreet.

Maybe back then the GMT was regarded as a tool watch so it didn't raise any eyebrows. Fidel needed to keep track of what time it is in Moscow as well as Havana. Now, if he'd worn a "President" on the other hand... 😁

I’m thinking navy blue to match the uniform.

Good reason to vote Joe. He rocks his DJ and Speedy openly and without shame. His opponent clearly doesn’t get watches.

The name's Biden. Joe Biden...

I'm sure he'll get a lot of votes around here 😁

My first boss had the same watch, bought it in 1960/61 when he was in the Navy- it costs him $150 at the PX. They were indeed considered high end sport watches at the time but not “luxury” watches as we know them today. Several of the NASA astronauts got their GMT’s the same way (PX) and they weren’t earning big money in the service at the time. Che also had a Rolex.

Also let’s not forget that prior to the revolution in Cuba, Havana was the playground to the rich and famous. I’m sure any decent jewelry store or casino/hotel gift shop had Rolexes at the time.

OMG. Buying a Rolex GMT at the PX! Those were the days. I understand that it's still possible to get Omega watches at the PX today. Wonder what other brands they carry? Can any serving members and veterans chime in please?

If watches were the only factor Biden would get my vote.

So much cooler than Trump

In reality I think South Park are spot on

Just come across this news story of how the president of Peru is facing possible impeachment for "permanent moral incapacity" and "illicit enrichment" because of her luxury watch collection (which includes a number of Rolex). Local police apparently raided her home in search of said Rolex because she failed to declare ownership of them...

https://www.smh.com.au/world/south-...and-could-see-her-sacked-20240403-p5fh02.html

I remember seeing a story once where some official had expensive watches photoshopped out, but they forgot to remove them from the reflection on the table.

In today's world, impropriety and insider trading go hand-in-hand with elected officials, so seeing a Senator, Governor or the President with a $10k+ watch reinforces disconnect with constituents and reminds everyone how wealthy most politicians are before they enter politics, or --more likely--how lucrative politics can be from speaking engagements, book deals, 'gifts', insider trading, shady deals, etc. IMO a speedmaster or seamaster is slightly less flashy because your avg. constituent doesn't recognize them, and while the cyclops is a dead giveaway that someone likely spent $10k+ on a watch, the media/paparazzi are keen to hone in on anything of glitz and glamour, even that subtle dress watch that looks innocuous from a distance despite being a $50k Patek or something.
