News of another murder in Knightsbridge London related to an attempted robbery. Apparently Blue Stevens who was 26 years was attacked for his Rolex watch In Knightsbridge. Blue was a traveller and by some accounts I've heard was from a well known boxing family so probably wasn't shy of putting up a fight. Sad news.

Very sad and sobering. I have just been thinking about which watch to wear on my upcoming trip to Europe (which includes London) and what jewelry my wife should bring. May need to rethink it all. Scary. Be careful out there.

Just not worth losing your life over stuff. Sad. I’ve worn my 2014 gmt all over the world without a problem. It was literally a tool watch for me. No longer, it attracts too much attn. Same with my 1675 Pepsi.

London is ok. Just don’t display watches or jewellery

For every Rolex robbery, there must be 10 fake Rolex robberies that we don't hear about.

Honestly guys. I work as a tour guide here in the UK. I don't work a specific city as we cover the whole country but I recently had a smartly dressed Italian couple on board who both sported Rolex. I did have a discreet word with them when we visited Oxford because there have been several watch thefts there recently.

I honestly wouldn’t define that as okay.
Be discreet do not display watches wear under clothing. These robbers are tipped off by spoters

Some years ago in Naples I had my Rolex ripped off my wrist despite being in a group of friends on a main street in the middle of the day. I went after the bastard but ended up in hospital. The next day we were on a crowded local bus when I was warned by a young man sitting opposite me of a pickpocket working his way through the standing passengers. When we got off the bus one of our group found that all his shirt buttons had been undone. Goodbye Naples.

I don’t mean it was ok what happened don’t take words out of context. Generally if you keep your watch hidden under clothing London is generally ok and you are safe. It is when people display wealth they attract criminals and spotters. In an ideal world I should be safe to walk down the street with a Rolex or keep my keys in the car and walk away from it and it is there on my return. Unfortunately, this is not the world we live in.

We understand each other, and that’s how I interpreted your earlier comment. I just don’t think we can be “okay” with how the situation in some cities has become. Some cities no longer deserve getting tourist dollars, and their citizens certainly deserve better than they’re getting. Not an easy problem to fix though. I live in a happy bubble where many folks don’t lock their doors (which freaks me out, but feels comfortable to witness) and personal safety is largely not a big concern. I’m lucky and grateful for this every day. It sucks to see what some other cities have as a new normal.

It isn't the world we live in. I have no problems wearing my most expensive watches in public in Oklahoma City or Tulsa. No one in either city has ever tried to rob me. Even in cities like Fort Worth, San Antonio, Colorado Spring, Santa Fe, etc. I have never had a problem.

I know that we have bad folks living everywhere in the world, but in most corners your odds of encountering one is slim. It is only when you travel in extremely touristy places that your odds of being pick pocketed or robbed go up. And it isn't because London is inherently awful, it is because a place with that level of tourism attracts thieves. Thieves who know that there is a large number of tourists who will only be in the city for a day or two who make for easy marks.

It’s out of control in London.

In Canada, I see people wear Rolexes on public transit commuting to work etc. but it’s always a ‘wrong place, wrong time’ thing.

I try to wear watches under a cuff or clasp up.

We were in London earlier this month and stayed close to Knightsbridge. For those not familiar with London, it’s an expensive area - the kids counted 24 Porsches in the vicinity of our hotel.

Poor deceased guy was only aged 24 - so sad.

I’ve lived and worked in London for 30 plus years (growing up in suburbs). Never once worried about wearing watches and jewellery until recently. Now I urge caution to any friends who have easily identifiable pieces (AP, Rolex). I also strongly believe that spotters are paid to identify victims too. Finally as I tell my teenage kids, be aware of anyone on an electric bike with their faces covered and remember millions of others have got through a day in London unscathed.

I live in London. People have been robbed for Rolex in non tourist quiet suburbs. Why? Because criminals have spotters. One guy was followed home from a supermarket. If an accomplice of a robber sees a watch they alert the robber. This is all organised in UK and some European countries. As for the US I have no idea never been there. Wear the watch under clothes and have it covered completely, at your own risk.

Just to refine my comment a bit, I don’t mind watch nerds asking me about my watches. My all time fave of these were the two retired NYC cops (both collectors) working security at The NY Times bldg. a few years ago. I had my 1675 on. We were having such a great discussion that I was almost late for my meeting. What I hate are non watch folks commenting out of the blue because during the pandemic and crypto bubble the press was going on and on about Rolex and how crazy expensive and unobtainable they were. They don’t see a watch, they see a wad of cash. Overall I think American Cities are less prone to what’s happening in Europe but recently a couple from one of the more upscale neighborhoods in my town were followed home from a nice restaurant and robbed of jewelry, watches phones ect. at gun point. ($70k) Fortunately no one was hurt and you don't mess with my town’s police who worked with Chicago police and arrested the crew within two months. There must have been a spotter at the restaurant.
