This is one exciting find which almost got away from me, a 1964 Rolex Submariner 5513 with gilt dial that is starting to turn tropical. The bezel has faded to a dark grey color and the watch case looks like its has not been polished. The serial number is 1.1 mil.

That is remarkably nice for a 5513 that early, what a beautiful dial, nice sharp case with pointed crownguards too

For me, the 1964 with that dial is not a PCG.

Lovely watch, by the by.

Looks good. Although the filter is maybe hiding the real beauty. It's not a gilt 5512, isn't it?

No, it's not. Fourth gen 1971 with a very suspicious replacement pearl on the insert but otherwise all original. Here it is as we speak without the filter

Yes it was a dump question. Loking at the depth rating would have helped...

Nice watch, anyway. I really like it.

Here's the kicker...it's my birth year watch! which covered 2 desired slots on my collection, a nice birth year and a 5512. No other watch other than my 69 GMT has gone through more hands for appraisal and authentication because both are grail pieces, birth years (mine and my brothers), vintage and highly desirable and hence popular on the redial and franken market and both are expensive and collectible. So I spend a good amount on authenticating etc, but at least I know what I have. The 5512 came on a not original SS bracelet that is a few years younger than the watch itself, but being a birth year I figured I myself don't have all the original parts in me so why should it?

Back to the OP though, that is a tremendous dial although the Tritium seems to be falling off at 6 and elsewhere. also, like mine, either the bezel or the beat on the bezel is a replacement. Not that it would keep me from getting it!!

Nice story. And the watches that you put the most effort in are mostly the nicest.

Well done.

Many thanks for all the compliments. Its a really a nice looking watch in the metal. The gilt writing makes the watch stand out all the more.

and my not so distant cousin a 5512.

The 5512 is one that I have been lusting for at the moment. Hope to find one soon.

Congrats. A very nice example. R those gilt hands?

Yes they are gilt hands too. Does it make the watch more valuable than with regular steel hands?
