The grey market is not what it used to be.
In what way?

They seem to have all the watches the ADs don’t seem to have.

I got a green OP in an AD in Macau. Two week waiting time.
I should mention I also got a black OP at a walk-in in Hong Kong!

Rare references, discontinued references and very competitive prices.

With those arguments, ADs aren't what they used to be either.

Official retailers did not usually stock rare references. You had to order them and wait. Ah, and internacional warranty.

Official retailers with high sales of watches did not have discontinued references.

In recent years, competitive prices and the grey market are been and are a joke. I reserve my opinion on the type of buyer in this current grey market.

The so-called shortage will never be over for their most popular sports watches because scarcity is their new business model.

Just got a call on friday that my Nodate Sub is now available for me. I even forgot that i got on a waiting list in April 2022.
I looked at the retail price and it is already at 9800,€ 😮 dont have such a big desire at the moment to lay out 10k for another watch. so i kindly refused the offer.

I don't blame you. The price rises over the past few years have been crazy. The Explorer 36mm, a watch I was kinda interested in, was just under AUD$10k back then. It's now AUD$13,250. I simply cannot justify spending that kind of money for what is a basic 3 hand tool watch. It was already way too expensive in 2022.

Going back there today to pick up the links I "ordered".
Turns out, they had them in stock all along 🙄
Maybe I'll actually get to go take a peek and see what they have in there.
Or maybe it will be roped off again with another flamboyant individual...

UPDATE: I didn't even bother. Not roped off this time though, at least.

I am becoming very discouraged with the new watch market in general... prices going up...availability not improving (for Rolex/Patek/others)...current designs/models not as good as past/vintage models (name a watch brand that is making better watches than they were 20-30 years ago)...conglomerates destroying the soul of once great brands (Longines/Panerai/etc)...

The list of Rolexes I want is down to one, and if I never get it, that won't bother me much.

While there are some bright spots (Omega's new Speedmaster Reverse Panda, and some of TAG's Glassbox offerings), I am going to try to enjoy the watches I have as there are very few new ones that I aspire to own.

Anyone else feel this way? I can see why there is so much interest in vintage and independents...

Honestly, can't blame you. Last summer dropped by the AD and was looking, got on the wait list for a Sub No Date, figuring it would be a few years. Got the call a few weeks later to collect it. Still think it's timing and when they get a watch in. They starting calling those on the list, keep going until someone says "Yes."

If I had gotten the couple years later, probably would have passed since there's plenty on the vintage market which excites me more.

I must admit, now that the market is softer there are plenty of other desireable watches that i would rather prefer owning than the sub.

I’ve been debating waiting 2-3 years (maybe more??) for a Sprite GMT or just buying a Coke GMT. It is definitely off putting to play these stupid games with ADs and to feel like you are asking them for a favor to buy their product. No fun in waiting for new, but the hunt for vintage is totally enjoyable to me.

A 6 week wait is reasonable. May I ask if any prior purchase history?

No prior purchases from either AD, but was introduced to the sales rep by a friend who has bought all the big steel sports models from him.

At this point, I hope to not be contacted before W&W in the event they unveil a white dial Explorer 1, or better yet, a smaller Explorer 2!

No prior spend from the AD that offered me one, either, but I got along with the rep great. I put my name down for it in passing, at the rep’s encouragement, but wasn’t decided on buying it by the time they reached out.
