Good afternoon guy/girls,

I am going to be celebrating a monumental occasion in my life soon and what other way to celebrate with a watch? My son is going to be born in august and I want to celebrate with by purchasing a GMT. I was wondering if any one has any advice as to where the best place to purchase a GMT is. I live out side of NYC so I have a bunch of options as far as jewelers go. Thanks in advance.

Specially the "batman" - originally I was looking at 87 GMT I have decided against it.

Congratulations!!!

For a birth year watch for you/ your son I would go to the actual rolex store. They may issue a discount and have great financing. Yiu want this to have all the bells and whistles in terms of paperwork boxes provenance etc because it may be in your family a long time

Try rhe one on Madison Avenue or Google rolex store nyc. Torneau is also an AD. There are several in NYC, pick the one most convineant* to you

In general, I think that an '87 GMT will age a lot better than the blnr.

Will this be for wearing or storage?

I am going to wear it and eventually one day pass it on to him.

Why do you say that it will age better?

In that case, get what is the most comfortable. Personally, I think contemporary watches are too big (hate the Rolex fat lugs), so it all comes down to your preference. Try the blnr at a dealer a few times to get a feel for it. It will wear quite differently than an older GMT. Afterwards, look around watchrecon.com and some of the Rolex collector sites. Maybe some other version will catch your eye.

From personal experience, you want a small comfortable watch when changing diapers. Good luck and congratulations!

I've found the BLNR to be very comfortable as an everyday watch. Yes, it does have a more substantial feel on the wrist than the vintage iteration, but in no way do I find it unwieldy. It's a fantastic watch. But as lenny indicated, it's all about personal preference. Good luck in your choice and congrats on your upcoming big day.

To me a birth year watch is really meaningful. Wouldn't make sense to me together a vintage as a birth year for your son as, of course, the watch is from..a different year. So I would look for a 2015 watch, or a new watch bought by you directly this year. Then it's forever linked emotionally to your son. Yes the moldean ones are heater, so are the modern omega divers and pretty much any brand. The only 2 things I would consider is 1- a watch that you really really like and 2- stay away from too trendy or modernized watches that may be out of fashion completely within years...go for a classic model with proved record.

All of that criteria is met by the GMT II IMO. I personally like the coke or the Pepsi better, but that is just a detail, and yiu can always seek additional bezels

Thanks for the advice! I concur with the fact the GMT is a timeless piece. I think itll be relevant in 25 years just the same as it was relevant 25 years ago. I decided against getting a piece for my birth year simply because itll be a more meaningful piece.

Very Nice, Still on the prowl. Everywhere I go, no one has one in stock. I am open to suggestions.

Have you tried Torneau and actual Rolex...?

A Blog to Watch has gone to Bob of Bob's Watches of Huntington Beach, CA for expert opinion on Rolex's from time to time, so I imagine it's a reasonably reputable outfit. It appears that they have a Batman in stock, with Box & Papers:

They are absolutely reputable. Sometimes they mislabel items but not really on sneaky ways. They'll call a gmt mark one a master II or list a p serial as 2005 or get a caliber wrong. But they are responsive on the phone and their watches are well authenticated and often serviced.

I just got the 2004 GMT from them and have purchased from them in the past.

I believe DAVIDSW has a one in as new condition with stickers still in place on the Rolex forum. I've always heard good things about him. Out of Florida I believe.
