Very saddened to hear the news this evening but Brian hasn’t been well, particularly since his wife passed away. The Beach Boys have been a big part of my life since 1990 (and the release of the “two-fer” cds). Reunited now with his brothers, Carl and Dennis.

Paul McCartney once called Brian Wilson’s “God Only Knows” the best song ever written.

Top that compliment.
Cheers and thanks for the music.

My 1st concert was the Beach Boys, Hampton Beach, NH 1968. Great stuff.

That is very sad to hear, my girlfriend and I were listening to my dad's best of the Beach Boys album in the CD changer just this past weekend and remarking about how good it was, every track is upbeat, positive and just about surfing, cars, chicks or a combination of the three, and that's really refreshing.

Brilliant dude.

But don't forget Sly Stone. As in Sly & the Family Stone. Also, brilliant. And he was a real barrier breaker.

Curiously I just read the novel "Once upon a time in Hollywood." (Structured different than the movie.) I had to do a lot of searching to find out what was real and what was not. So had been looking up the Wilson Brothers.

... not sure what else to write, or if there is anything else to write ...

I saw Paul talk about that. A love songs that opens with “I may not always love you” blew him away. Then the layers of sound Brian used on “god only knows” and pet sounds as a whole had an influence on Sgt pepper. Unfortunately Sgt Pepper pushed Brian over the edge a bit as he thought he might be done, he could never create something like Sgt Pepper not realizing he had an influence on it.

Brian was so much more than that though. His music became increasingly more complex (arrangements, production, harmonies, etc) and his search for perfection led to a breakdown in 1966/67 and he abandoned his work on SMiLE. Mike Love, Brian’s cousin and band member famously told Brian, “don’t f#ck with the formula”, i.e. prioritise commercial success over artistic creativity. Brian Wilson (RIP) was a true genius.

Well said. When the rest of The Beach Boys called it a day Brian called in “the wrecking crew” a group of studio musicians who were well sought after in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. They can’t remember how many cuts they did for good vibrations but Brian was seeking a certain sound and wouldn’t stop until he got it.

He was deaf in one ear from a punch he took from his father as a kid (his father who later sold the rights to his music.) he got some push pack from the band about leaving the “surfing” sound but damn when he cut loose he could create.

That’s right - I forgot he was deaf in one ear. I remember hearing something about that being one reason he recorded or mixed in mono. Brian was also self-thought at most musical instruments and was one of the first artists to produce his own work. The Beatles had George Martin but the Beach Boys had Brian Wilson. I love the term “Pocket Symphony” which is what Brian tried to create - a two minute masterpiece!

Carl on God Only Knows had the voice of an angel.
And there again was Brian’s greatness. One of his best songs imo at least, but he knew his brothers voice hit it better. He didn’t care, didn’t need to be lead. Just wanted the song to be as good as it could be.

Makes me think of seeing Al Jardine a while back. I was hemming and hawing as I was recovering from a surgery and sitting was painful but a member here who was going through something worse then me said I should go as he’d go if he was closer.

Glad I went. First off I love jardine doing Sloop and the guy was just so happy on stage constantly talking about Brian (Brian wasn’t there of course) and how Jardine considered himself so lucky and blessed to be in Brian’s circumference and never have a fall out. Jardine of course loved music and had talent but he stated he never would have “made it” without Brian.

It seemed like Al Jardine could have been your neighbor. The amount of times he thanked us in the audience for coming to see him was something else. He was the first person I thought about when I heard of Brian’s passing, I’m sure it really hit him. Second was Julian Lennon who said Brian was the kindest soul he ever met. Knowing how Alzheimer’s hits people in its late stage I’d guess those who loved him are glad he’s at peace in a way but the loss always hurts.
