Out of time: NFL tells Beckham not to wear watch in games

CLEVELAND (AP) — Odell Beckham’s football fashion taste clashed with the NFL’s.

The league reached out to the Browns on Monday and told them that their star can no longer wear a watch on the field after he sported an expensive one during Sunday’s season opener against Tennessee.

The flashy, fashionable wide receiver wore an orange Richard Mille-designed watch — which retails for more than $250,000 — during the Browns’ 43-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

On Monday, league spokesman Michael Signora said while there are no rules prohibiting jewelry, there is a policy “prohibiting hard objects.”

And tacky, ostentatious displays of consumerism...

Many watches, jewelry, cars, houses, shoes, handbags, etc, etc can be called ostentatious displays of consumerism. It's called capitalism.

No one ever accused football players (in general) as being geniuses. Just because he could “afford” to, didn’t mean he should have. Maybe a bit more focus on the game and the outcome might have been different.

I'm just confused as to why you'd even need a watch during a game...... oh.... you don't.

Probably an advertisement contract rather than "an ostentatious display of consumerism".

I don’t think any football player is going to get hurt getting hit by a watch unless it’s a Vostok. I think the watch would get destroyed more likely. The league probably just wants to keep things “uniform” if it was a publicity thing it did get a lot a play.

"According to a 2009 Sports Illustrated article, 78% of National Football League (NFL) players are either bankrupt or are under financial stress within two years of retirement and an estimated 60% of National Basketball Association (NBA) players go bankrupt within five years after leaving their sport."

Wonder why!!!

Look at Floyd mayweather, yes he is a boxer but another Richard Mille guy. He has made over a billion dollars in his career but got jammed up with an IRS bill and asked if he could pay it after his fight with that MMA fighter which he probably made over 200 million. 200 million is a lot of money depending on how you live, I could make it last quite a while, I’ll let you know if it ever happens

According to RM he has no relations with the brand, unlike Rafael Nadal, who wore his during US open final.

+1. We're talking about it here along with the majority of the news outlets. That's advertising.

Agreed I was just commenting on athletes who make a lot of money and lose it, apparently Floyd had money management issues

These guys live like the money will keep rolling in forever. Their respective leagues need to run compulsory financial management courses.
