I had a the soft touch problem with my VW. I solved it by... selling the damn car. I still own a VW, but it doesn't have that awful sticky coating all over everything.

The warranty and pictogram cards are more important than the box.

Exactly. Anything without the serial number of the watch has little importance to me.

I have a 50th anniversary 1957 omega speedmaster moonwatch 311.30.42.30.01.001, my wooden/black box is damaged and I would like to replace/repair my box. Is there anyway I can do this? I am devastated, the rubberised black lining of my box has decomposed leaving a black sticky residue on everything - the watch is fine. I am very aware the impact of the damage on the value of my watch. I have emailed Omega and every stockist on their website. I have also searched on Google and EBay but with no luck. I really appreciate any help or advice you could offer.
The automotive analagies are spot on. People would probably value the box from the original 57 watch one hell of a lot but I doubt they would be so fussed about a 2007 box in comparison. The solution though is to upholster the interior of the box. It won't be original but in 30-40 years time someone will probably be happy enough to have most of the original box rather than nothing.

What’s funny is my ‘97 GTI didn’t have soft touch and all the switches and buttons looked as new when I sold it 13 years later- the car itself was a QC nightmare though. Drivetrain was excellent, it was the trim falling off, door locks sticking (had to climb through the hatch a few times) rattled and bangs- and the rust that finally made my dump it. In contrast, the QC on my ‘06 A3 is excellent- but all the widow switches are peeled up and nasty. Can’t have it all

As a thought experiement, consider this... Omega charges $200 for a very well made nato strap. What do you think they would charge for an heirloom quality leather wrapped hardwood box? Would you have been willing to pay an extra $1000 for your watch if such a box were an option? They have to cut costs somewhere, and I think most of us are fine with that being in the box.

This will give you an idea of how much Omega would charge for a leather wrapped box. 😲

Hodinkee would tack on another $200 if it was a Hodinkee-Omega collaboration.
