My son is responsible for me having any interest in (vintage) Omegas with the Speedmaster and NASA story. His 17th birthday is coming up and I would like to buy him something vintage as a keeper. His favourite of the trilogy is the Railmaster - but the budget doesn't make it close to a vintage example (one exception from Chrono24 of all places below...) Couldn't find anything on OF right now...

The Seamaster 600 look like a good option with a great movement, but there are so many different references (and I not sure how closely dial design etc is tied to the reference). He likes the look of triangular or solid block hour markers, maybe with arabics at 3, 6, 9, and 12; example of design below (but which seems to be priced well below market - so incorrect?) Hoping for any suggestions as to as references and/or movements to search on (or to avoid) - thank you.

I did find one 1963 Railmaster advertised on Chrono24 that would be manageable price-wise - but my German stops at 'zwei Biere bitte" - any opinions please?

Thank you again,
Martin

What about the modern remake of the Railmaster? Finding a nice example of a vintage Railmaster will be difficult and quite expensive. Further, I don't think it would serve as a good first watch...well I personally would not want to daily wear a vintage watch like that. I think the modern remake is the best of both words, especially for someone at that age. Its a beautiful watch with the look of the vintage, but the reliability of a modern piece.

If you are interested in originality, stay away from Seamaster 600s with that dial.

In my experience, Seamaster 600s and their like is the most commonly redialed Omega - there are loads of originals though, few of them are very interesting/sporty however.

Thanks @zrleopold - I have been looking at the re-releases from mid-2000's on but have been a bit higher than budget; and thanks @ConElPueblo - my feeling was that watch was wrong. I want something that's not dressy and not a dive watch - that wonderful middle ground...

You have mentioned a budget a couple of times; would you consider sharing the details? It's hard to advise you without that key piece of information.

Good point - allowing for shipping and import taxes etc around USD2,000 - maybe a touch more...

There are a number of redials from the seventies, but I'd suggest a green/blue/red coloured Genève from that era. They don't have the most hallowed of Omega movements and should definitely be serviced on receiving it, but they are full steel, 35-36mm watches that wear well and strike a good, slightly playful, balance between sport and dress.

Edit: just saw your budget; in that bracket you can find a boatload of Omegas. My suggestion is around $500 for an unserviced specimen.

Maybe a 168.022? They don't usually have numerals, but they have a good wrist presence. There are certainly older Seamasters (e.g. 2577) with 3-6-9-12 dials.

I know you added no diver, but a 2254.50 hits some of the marks; combo of triangle and block lume, sword hands for the more vintage look, and can be found in the budget. Another plus is you could find him one from his birth year which might make it more special and still feel vintage to him. Just a thought.
