FS: Junghans "Desert Rat" 1940s – A Watch for the Adventurer

The Junghans "Desert Rat", as I’ve come to call it, feels like it belongs on the wrist of a 1930s explorer—a pilot navigating the open skies like Saint-Exupéry or a desert traveler tracing the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia.

It carries the warmth of sunbaked dunes, the patina of time, and the spirit of adventure.

Key Features:

- Dial: A stunning, naturally aged sand-colored dial with beautifully preserved original yellow lume that glows with vintage charm. The reflective seconds subdial pops in the right light, adding an unexpected touch of depth. The military-style dial featuring lumed Roman numerals and blue baton hands filled with bright yellow lume, exuding both elegance and practicality. The Junghans eight-pointed star logo, with "Junghans" inscribed within, adds a distinctive historical touch.

- Case: 34mm (excl. crown) Chrome case in good condition, with fixed lugs, some aging apparent, consistent with use.

- Lugs: Fixed 18mm lugs. Comes fitted with a new Niloticus Dune NATO strap, perfectly complementing the desert hues of the dial.

- Movement: Junghans manufacture 97/1 movement, details below:

Jewels: 15 jewels
Frequency: 18,000 vibrations per hour (vph),
Shape: Barrel (Tonneau) design, characterized by a rounded, rectangular shape.
Dimensions: The movement measures 8.75 x 12 lignes
Protected by a sturdy dust cover.

A fresh service was performed in March 2025 (invoice available), the watch is ready to be worn for a new cycle.

A true vintage piece with character, perfectly suited for any collector or enthusiast who appreciates the romance of early exploration.

Price: $575 (price increased in April to reflect the service performed) + shipping at buyer’s expense -> Reduced to $425

If you don’t have a 35-36mm watch like this in your collection you’re missing out.

Too bad I already have a UG and some others that fit the bill.

These things are wonderful daily wear strap monsters with cool background stories.

I’d be surprised if this lasts longer. Junghans still exists and has a pretty interesting story being one of the East German watch makers that kept going through the Cold War.
