Recent trip to Asia - Oops

I was in Asia working and conveniently went to the two watch shows in HK. I was successful with some speedmasters, but toward the end I was burrowing in cabinets looking for more speedmasters when this caught my eye.

I got it pulled out, and asked the price. The girl didn't know, and said her boss was on another stand. He came over and we started talking. He told me that he loved vintage, but he made all his money on nearly new. (I hear this all the time in Asia).

How much? 7,000 HKD he says. As I look I realise its probably re lumed, probably in the wrong case, probably a re dial.

He then tells me he has had it for many years, and that he thinks the dial is "re done" but many years ago.

How much you give me he asks. Now in HK most dealers don't negotiate very far. So to save face, I have to find a price high enough so that I dont look like an idiot, and low enough that he will refuse.

So I say "I only see 5000, sorry"

He grabs my hand and says OK! (so that's about USD $640)

So oops.

Now have at it - is it a re dial wrong case worth not much?

I believe movement should be 267 and serial numbers are between 15 and 17 million, so i would expect it to be a transplant (which it anyway should be because of the case, as you already mention)

I'm afraid so, yes.

... but it still makes for an amusing story. Priceless. 😉
