路路#SpeedyTuesdayMy lovely wife (and according to her also from my little daughter), I received a great gift. A Speedmaster '57 re-edition in superb/mint condition. She was able to track down an unworn Speedmaster '57 with all boxes & papers via a Speedy collector friend of mine. Behind my back of course, it was a total surprise.
It came on a stainless steel bracelet, which still had the blue plastic on the insides. I removed the bracelet as I am just afraid to use it 馃榾 It is just new (but it is dated back to 2000, based on the serial no. Also the end links are of the 840 type instead of the later 849 type).
Anyway, here are a few quick & dirty pictures I just took with my snapshot camera.
I put the watch on a brown leather calf strap (OMEGA) with a folding clasp (also OMEGA). The bracelet will be safely tucked away, but I am pretty sure I will use it sooner or later anyway. This watch came in a black leather box (a bit flatter than the usual red boxes) with all papers/booklets etc. The box also has the PIC and serial number sticker on it. I've seen this watch also coming in red boxes, probably the earlier models (also had a different type bracelet, without the pushers on the clasp).
This watch was introduced in 1997 together with the box of 23 Speedmasters (22 mission speedies, 1 '57 re-edition and a spare caliber 1861 movement) and also as a separate watch of course. Came on a stainless steel bracelet or a brown tan calf strap and was also available in gold.
I always thought this watch was introduced in 1997 because of the 40 years anniversary of the Speedmaster, but I've also seen descriptions (in the Isnardi book) that it was actually introduced in 1998 because of the 150 years of OMEGA. But since there are a few 1997 models around (based on serial number), that explanation doesn't make much sense to me.
The watch of course is a homage to the CK2915 Speedmaster from 1957, but only the appearance is artificially a reminder of that very first model. The dimensions, movement, dial, hands etc are far from interchangeable of course. OMEGA used a Moonwatch case and decided to put a stainless steel tachymeyet scale bezel on there (with "Base 1000" engraved in there, like the CK2915), high polished broad arrow hands and a dial with an applied OMEGA logo and no 'Professional'. Well, in any case, it is an homage and not a re-issue or 'copy' and it should be treated as an homage 馃榾
I love it. Also because of the extra value it has to me since I received it from my wife (and daughter), but also because I like the appearance of the watch and the fact that it is just like new. It has been sitting in a box for 13 years.
