Reasonable value for Pie Pan Constellation (ref 14393)

Hi everyone! I am a relative newbie to vintage Omegas and recently acquired a 1962 pie pan constellation (ref 14393 / 4 SC 6 1) from an estate sale and was hoping to find out what something like this might be worth if I were to sell it. The dial is in great shape and the case is solid 18k gold. It has black onyx inserts in the indicators and the original crown. The crystal is either original or a genuine Omega replacement. I think I will put it on a strap and wear it for a long time, but it would be nice to have a rough idea of the value before I did that. Figured this was the best place to ask!

Check the sold listings on eBay for the same model as yours in a similar condition.

I have checked eBay for the same model and the only configuration that matches was sold for best offer, so it is hard to get a decent estimate.

Thank you I appreciate the advice, but I have checked both previously. There were none of this configuration on WatchCharts and only one listed on Chrono24. I figured that for something with limited information online this may be a good place to post.

I’ll let other members weigh in if they choose to do so. Respectfully, you should keep in mind that OF is a community, not a free appraisal service. Might be better if you just hung around with us for at least a few months. You’ll pick up a lot of knowledge from members with far more experience than I have. The more you participate, the more you’re likely to get in return.

That’s fair and I apologize if I came off as rude or demanding. I think my post may have been a bit misleading when I said “relative” newbie to vintage Omegas instead of “complete” newbie. I started collecting watches recently and this is my first vintage watch. I found this community a few days ago when I was looking in to buying it and fell in love with the dial. With the available money I have if I want to continue collecting it will require a better understanding of relative values so that I can continue to hunt for new watches to wear, knowing I won’t be completely underwater if I need to sell to get a new piece. I’m genuinely interested in not just the value of this watch but which features are considered desirable in vintage Omegas and some of the reasons why (e.g. beauty, history, rarity, etc.).

Welcome to OF. Hang around. You’ll learn a lot that will be helpful to you.

If that is true and they are in a similar condition to the OPs, then I would buy every one of them as that is probably about half the market value for an 18k pie pan Connie.

Welcome @sternoptyx

Unfortunately, you did come across as “I’ve bought this watch, what can I sell it for?”
I’m sure that wasn’t your intention and I hope you enjoy this hobby - you have a very nice Constellation there, that would grace any collection.

This reference isn’t ( currently) as in demand as the earlier lyre lug Connies or later dogleg Connies but it is still a very nice watch.

The case looks pretty good, as does the dial. ( can’t really tell if the marks are on the crystal or dial)
Please remove the bracelet ASAP as the expanding end pieces will destroy the lugs ( if they haven’t already done so. )

By chance I was watching this one at auction in the US just the day before yesterday.
It is a deluxe ( solid gold dial) but it is also a dome dial - so swings and roundabouts with regards to value.
It is a pretty watch, in good condition, with papers - but I think that this was a strong result for a 14394 ($5,700 with commission ) so two people must have really wanted it - I think if you bought yours for less than $4k you’ve done well.

Now you can tell us that you paid $500 and make us all green with envy….

Thank you for the info! I definitely did not mean to come off that way. I would love to wear it for years and bought it without knowing the true value because I wanted it for that purpose, I just like to have a sense of the value in general.

The scratches are on the crystal and I am trying to decide whether I should replace it. The dial is in fantastic shape in general. So far the lugs have survived with little scratching or damage from the bracelet, but I plan to swap it for a leather strap ASAP.

I wish I got it for $500 haha but after hearing some of the info you all have provided here I do feel pretty good about the price paid.

you're welcome
Crystals are thought of as 'service items' - if you replace the crystal, make sure that you get a genuine Omega crystal -it's part of the water resistance of the watch - and IMHO, one without a cyclops window over the date (which were special order and don't really belong on a connie.)
You can try Polywatch to clean it up a little (but mask off the bezel first)
Also, if you plan on wearing it, get the watch serviced, as it shows signs of light rotor rub - just insist on NO polishing of the case

I agree about the magnifier on the date window. It’s not my favorite compared to a regular crystal. Hoping to take it in to get serviced after the holidays (and open to any recommendations on a reliable in Atlanta or otherwise). Will make sure to very direct about not polishing the case. Thanks again!
