Real name vs a ‘handle’

As others have said, yes to all of the above. I have no illusions about concealing my identity from governments or any particularly advanced actors, but in today's world of trolling, SWATting, and so on, I have no interest in making it easy to connect my online identity to my real identity. I also see no reason to make it easy for anyone to connect the other direction - employers looking at online posts when interviewing for a job, etc.

I have some handles that I've used repeatedly and that are now probably fairly easy to tie to my real identity, so I rotate from time to time - this is the first forum where I've used this handle, for instance.

I am under no illusions whatsoever about the fact that anyone who wanted to make a close study of my posts here could probably identify me with a bit of sleuthing. No real surprise, given the nature of the internet and our constant presence on it.

Inspiring words from the ElCóndordelaPueblos 😁

When the mods start picking on you, you know it's going to be a long day 😜

Anyway, I have never thought of hiding my identity online by using a handle, it was just the done thing when I started to venture to online fora twenty years ago.

I've done a pretty shit job at being covert actually since I've used the same handle on pretty much every forum I've ever joined. It's also my eBay (and other online auction) user name, so it is easy to establish a paper trail on all the cheap watches I buy to sell on for a massive profit here later on 😁

Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would..."

I worked really hard at trying to come up with my handle- the nuances of the capital J and little w speak to my sense of self and of course my self portrait.

There may not be privacy from governments, but there is certainly privacy from other internet users at large. I never assume who I am talking to is who I appear to be talking to. And I have to have known a user a long time before I would share my e-mail address even. Some people think everyone is a friend they have yet to meet, other people believe if you are not blood, you are a stranger - I am somewhere between the two.

sorry I forgot to post a watch pic - 1918 Demier Fr. silver cased. New crystal, original hands (refurbished) and dial pretty much as found. 101555711_250752849329293_8434336808858288128_o.jpg

Simply because I’d rather not have people confuse my love for the hobby by knowing exactly how much my collection is worth and making it about money.

Ummm... not many people on a forum like this care what watches are 'worth' - do they? My most valuable watches are the ones I can bore you about for the longest time. My 'waterproof' (NOT!) Audax Fortissimo is therefore right up there with my 30mm screw-case Pobeda.

Gallet clam-shell case, had a special flared crystal that apparently did not require a gasket to seal the joint - this is a different patent to the (and so on and so on and on and on and on lol)

I suppose you could bore someone with a Rolex for quite a while, especially if you started off by reading a couple of paragraphs straight of the dial, maybe.

I don't think that people googling my name for professional reasons need to know all about my watch obsession.

I am not very tech literate. I thought the reason for handles was because it would be easier than having, 600 Dave's, a couple of hundred Mike's and a few Albert's on a forum with a lot of members.

I never really gave much thought to the security risks, naively believing that there are billions of people in the world and the chances of someone being interested in my insignificant life quite small.

Yeah, but we figured you out from the start. You're Spock.

Slightly related question. I used my initials and by birthday as an account name. What a surprise! However, when I did that a year ago or so I assumed there was also the possibility to change the display name which was not there. So now I am stuck with my account name as display name. Is there any way to change this still and not loosing all the history and PB’s I by now have? Is there a system admin or so who can do such a thing? I looked around and could not find anything.

In general I have no problem with my name being out in public for these things although I am slightly reluctant towards full details for people also googling me professionally every now and then.
