This is how I look at it: uncommon - a nice original example goes on sale 5-10x a year. very uncommon - a nice original example goes on sale 1-3x a year. rare - a nice original example goes on sale 1x every 1-3 years. very rare - a nice original example goes on sale 1x every 5-10 years. So at least how I consider things, there are very few vintage omega models I would consider rare.
On eBay, everything is "Rare". I have ceased to even register it. Even if a watch was indeed truly rare, that in itself is no reason to lust after it. Plenty of consumables have been rare and also truly crap.
The overuse of 'rare' is one of my biggest pet peeves. I don't mean just with eBay either. It ranks up there in the Annoyance Category almost as high as people who don't use turn signals and bait stealing crabs.
There are certain words like, "rare" on eBay that mean absolutely nothing! Like the word "original," for instance.
Or like this line from the seller's description - "Case- stainless steel case 35mm without crown, good condition no damage no rust" And when the watch arrived - And inside -
increasingly, I am learning not to get toooo angered by it. Takes effort except when just so obviously FUNNY !!
"NOS" is also abused, and actually fraudulent, in many cases. Sadly, I've seen it thrown around a bit too casually in our own sales forum as well.
"This is a Very Rare Omega Speedmaster Watch! " Here it is...though in this instance rare may be the unique caseback http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400240151371&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Yes, well, it was all a bit of a saga This was an impulse purchase, and we all know where that leads . . . it came all the way from Romania, and the watch had a lovely dial and a beautiful case (apart from this back) and I was heartbroken - I thought long and hard about perhaps finding another back (fat chance) or laser welding (edge of the back is too thin) or whatever but in the end I persuaded the seller to take it back and give me a refund, which to be fair he did. But it was all very disappointing and stressful and cost me £45 to send it back to Romania. Which I am sure will not prevent me from making the same impulsive mistakes all over again
Uh, I think that may be Han K; there is a good chance this watch came from Asia...doesn't mean Han was any smarter though!
