·Hello everyone,
I recently acquired this Certina Blue Ribbon Automatic and I’m hoping someone can help identify it.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time searching online but haven’t been able to find another example with the same case, dial color, and bracelet.
The dial appears to be burgundy (unless there is a more accurate name for this color).
The watch is running well. It has been keeping time for over 10 hours, and the automatic winding works as it should.
However, there is one issue with the date mechanism. Around midnight, the date begins to change but does not complete the transition. Instead, it stops between two dates for a while and then eventually returns to the previous date. I first tried advancing the hands manually (without using the quickset), but the result was always the same. Later I let the watch run naturally past midnight. The date indicator remained between two dates for about 20 minutes. After I wore the watch and moved it around, the date returned to the previous day instead of advancing.
The dial also has a very unusual crackled pattern. At first glance it looks like cracked lacquer, but the pattern continues underneath the printed text and the applied hour markers. I’m not sure whether this is an original factory finish, a lacquer defect, or age-related deterioration.
The bracelet has no visible markings or logos that I could find. However, the end links fit the case extremely well—almost as if they were made specifically for this watch. Either the bracelet is original, or it has been exceptionally well matched to the case.
The inside of the case back is marked “Certina Watch Co. Swiss Stainless Steel”. From the information I’ve found, this type of case back marking may indicate a watch intended for the U.S. market, likely from the early 1970s. If anyone has more accurate information, I’d really appreciate it.
The case itself still has a strong satin-brushed finish and does not appear to have been heavily polished during its lifetime.
The movement is Certina Cal. 25-651 (29 jewels).
