Railmaster vs Explorer?

Railmaster is cool but personally like the explorer better. I think the dial is cleaner with smaller second tick marks.

I've always been a big Omega fan, but the Explorer trumps the Railmaster IMHO.

I had both, the 39mm Omega RM and the 36 (twice) and 39 Rolex Explorer. Price wise the RM is more bang for the buck as long as it is under $2500 (36mm RM has been going up in price like crazy); my preferred size in both cases in 36mm

If I didn't own either (which I don't) I would opt for the Explorer. And I am looking to get one. With that said, if I had already owned the railmaster, and felt that it filled the same niche in my collection, I would keep it and seek out something else I had my eye on for the time being. Like others have said though, if the Explorer is super appealing to you, and I get it -- it's a great piece -- get it. If you do choose to trade in for it, I'd give it time, because it sucks having regret for giving up a piece you really like.

36mm Explorer for the win, for me.

My preferences in order are Explorer 1016, Railmaster 2504.52, and Explorer 114270, all 36mm because I feel the proportions are better. However, if push came to shove I would probably buy the 114270 out of the three because the 1016 is more than I want to pay and an Explorer has the renown that the Railmaster lacks.

If I had been the OP back in 2017, I would have sold the 39mm Railmaster and purchased a 36mm, Railmaster or Explorer.

Photos are not to the same scale.

2nd generation Railmaster is understated elegance in a historically noted work-watch. For me, it is literal perfection.

I went for the 14270 first, and then recently added a 2504. 36mm is perfect for me, I find the Explorer a little dressier and the Railmaster a little more rugged - planning on keeping both in the collection for a very long time!

Nice watches. I prefer the 1016 Explorer and 2504 Railmaster because they both look more like the tool watches they both were originally designed to be.

1016 or any of the other explorer 1s over that Omega. It's a harder decision if we are talking about speedmasters.

A Speedmaster is a chronograph and a completely different type of watch than the Explorer and Railmaster, which are more general purpose tool watches. I already own a 60th Anniversary Speedy and an Explorer-type watch will be my next watch purchase which is why I am interested in this thread. My choice will probably be a 36mm Explorer because I do not like the designs of the new offerings of the Railmaster, and the 2504.52 version mentioned here is lacking in anti-magnetic properties (not that I actually need it 😀) that the Explorers and other Railmasters have.

Great posts here, many comments seem to mirror my current thought process.

I am in the process of purchasing a 36mm RM yet, find with the recent price increase I may purchase a 36 14270 or 114270 that is around 15% more. The Rolex, to me, seem to have more value. First World problems I guess...

Never could own a Explorer 1, it’s got nothing that interests me. Do own the 116000 blue dial though. Still doesn’t hold any weight in comparison to my RM.

This 36mm RM was the watch I always wanted. All my Rolex watches will go before I get rid of this.

Both are great choices, but I like the Railmaster a little more. To me, it's more unique than the Explorer.

Hi everyone,

I am hoping to resurrect a previous debate, which I have a hard time settling! I currently own an Omega Railmaster 2503.52 (the previous re-edition) and have owned it for about 8 months. It truly is a great 'vintage' piece with many unique design attributes. However the rugged and sleek design of the newest Rolex explorer (214270) are tempting me to trade it in.

I love the refined design and relative rarity of the Railmaster, however the Explorer offers a newer design, with a very robust case and bracelet.

Thoughts? Any guidance is much appreciated! See pics below.

Cheers,
Viddy

I have the 39 mm version Co-axial which I specifically bought on the strap as I absolutely loved it.
I also chose it because it seemed to have the main bugs ironed out of the movement as it has the 2500C version.
It will likely be the very last watch I own after all others are gone.

I have owned the 114270 and it was magnificent but too small for my wrist. It's long gone but certainly not forgotten.
At the current price point of the 124270, i couldn't justify it as the Railmaster permanently fills that spot in the collection.

I vote the Railmaster.
