Thank you for the great info everyone. If I do decide to sell it it wouldn’t be cheap. I’ve already had an offer of $5000 but that is laughable to be honest. I’m looking for more like in the $20k range. This watch has a very colourful past. It was actually my grandfather’s. back in the 1920’s, my grandfather was a bootlegger for alcohol and used the rails to get his products across state lines. He told me once, one of his buyers lost a lot of money in the markets, lost almost everything including his house and couldn’t pay, so my grandfather said, ok, I will take your watch as a down payment. It’s been family owned ever since. My father who now is in his 80’s has gone into long term care. I had a chance to clear out his safety deposit box and when I saw the Railmaster, I instantly knew the story my grandfather was talking about. I hadn’t seen the watch until last week. I went on this forum because I needed some insight. Thank you for the cat picture, and I promise I’m not AI. I’m a regular person and I’m not a sales person or Broker. Like I said above, I found it in my dad’s safety deposit box.

Well, you can ask whatever price you want, but the actual value depends on condition and yours is not good. I don't think that anyone other than your family will care about that provenance.

Will you throw in the Rado at your asking price? 😉

$20k lol. I was going to point out that you’ve gone beyond the realms of asking for info into a blatant unauthorised sales post but since you are away with the fairies about value it doesn’t really matter. I have a watch that belonged to my grandfather that I value at twelvety million pounds but I’m not daft enough to put it up for sale as such.

It’s a rare watch but condition is poor-average and your asking price is far too high.

…nobody is gonna address the 1920’s bootlegger story? Was bootlegging still an issue in 1953?

In Saudi Arabia perhaps!

I’m now hoping that the contributor who offered the $5k reconsiders…

…and drops their offer to $4k lol.

Unfortunately for the OP people here generally know from the worth of vintage Omega watches—it’s right there in the forum title. Maybe a history forum would be more receptive to tales of the Great Depression of 1955.

And as was pointed out in the first thread, isn’t this just a sales post? I’ve seen more innocuous posts than this get accused of soliciting sales.

I don’t blame the OP for believing the family lore around the watch. My watchmaker has told me stories of people bringing him plastic 70’s coo-clocks and saying their grandfather brought it home from WWII- it always hung in their grandmother’s kitchen, was a precious family heirloom and worth thousands. When he would try to explain that it was a plastic clock and actually says Made in Hong Kong on the bottom, they would get offended and claim he was trying to rip them off.

Stories get distorted, folklore created for entertainment or aggrandizement and people believe what they want to believe.

My Casio F-91W originally belonged to Rasputin. I can't confirm this but I believe he only survived his first assassination attempt because a passerby saw the faint glow of its LED backlight being activated and called for help.

I have over 200 posts on the forum so please DM me offers above $2000.

Hello again... .

I just replied to your previous post ( its locked) . will repost it here for all to read and comment.

Hello

First off I agree one member that this is a BACKDOOR SALES POST. Which is frowned upon on the OF.

no matter what some members will send your " direct offers " no matter what... .
a strong suggestion.
@mzee3500 apologize to the group .

We are not a free valuation and clearing house.... so your questions " everyone, would this be worth anything in this condition? And if I wanted to, how would I go about selling it? Last question is it possible to get this thing working again?"

If you want to learn more about your example. Get the watch opened up take pics of inside case back , movement and if there is an inner movement cover or not. A side view of the case would able be helpful.

This is a community of collectors new and old and want to spread the passion....

people here are more then happy to help new members ....

Regards

From the photos the OP provided we really have no clue as to the true condition of the watch . All we know is the crystal is crazed and scratched , lum missing and most likely floating around somewhere inside the watch. A good reason why the movement is not running...

I personally dont like using the word "RARE" , unless I am ordering a steak at Peter Lugers . These were made on an assembly line and not bespoke. Let just say they are uncommon.

Always thought this reference was a great. But that is my opinion and take it that.

Hi @Jakeys
Let just keep on topic, OP wrong about any relation between bootlegging and using this watch .... We realyl dont need to drag her thru the mud.... do we ?

The watch is interesting... and It better that she found the OF and learned more about the watch as opposed that it might have just been tossed in the bin as junk ..

To help save 2777-2 is a great thing to do ... we are here to help spread the passion and safe stuff from being melted ( gold value ) and stuff like this that might have been toss or donated to good will...

The real question for the OP did she have any relative working for one of the Canadian Railway systems ?

As most of the 2777-2 watches were special order from the Canadian Dist at the time.

Indeed correct. Thanks for safekeeping it all these year and I'd appreciate its return to its rightful owner.

Good outcome.

However, keeping it running isn't a good idea.
Whatever lubricants remain after all this time will have dried out and, when combined with bits of lume, dust etc, turned into grinding paste.
If you intend to wear it you should get it serviced. Once certain parts are worn beyond repair, finding replacements for this watch will be difficult.
