Hello members,

Did the watches of the first batch 2777-1 TA have a signed crystal? Is it obligatory for this model?

Or did they also come with unsigned crystals?

Does the Omega logo on the recent original replacement crystal look different (as I assume)?

Who of you military experts can give an answer and/or have a photo for comparison?

Thanks

No military expert here, but I have an untouched example and the crystal isn't signed.

Not to hand, I'm afraid. I'm two days into using a new laptop so there's almost no photos on here and the watch itself is locked away. I can dig out a few old photos from my old laptop if you need to compare? This watch, without word of exaggeration, didn't see a watchmaker for the first 40 years of its life and I know the glass was never replaced. Its never been renovated or refurbished in any way, shape or form ... but in due course, it will be considerately "helped".

@mac_omega Both of my '53s are signed.... damnably hard to photograph. Afraid I do not know the symbols by era or if they were originally signed when issued. As a non-collector, I have not bothered much about originality of crystals unless it is for a reference that is difficult to fit properly.

Well, I suppose some might argue otherwise, but in my mind, I am merely an enthusiast. I will admit to knowing enough not to get taken (usually) on vintage references that interest me. 🤨

Actually I can relate to that... but an enthusiast with a collection ends up being a collector....
(Apologies to OP for thread drift.)

Thank you all for your contributions and photos.

It seems that there is no common rule.
Some have logo, others don´t and the logos look different (most likely from different periods)...

Hi Eric, here is one that turned up nice and gunky, I think the crystal is unsigned, will confirm this for you with a closer inspection when i get access to it later in the week

My common rule would be if the watch has been worked on/serviced it has a logo!

Isn't @MSNWatch the king of this reference?! 😁🙄😜

Mine hasn´t seen a watchmaker for decades. Movement is really dry. Crystal is unsigned, but is it original? How to answer that question?

Hello,

I'm a very deep lover of the Omega 53. I can assure you :

- original models of crystal are not signed. I dont know when the signed models have been made but, if my thoughts are righ, it is laser written, what would made them quite young...

- about the shape of the crystal, there are slightly different : the original has a thinner dome compared to the new who are a bit higher.

I have two,53, both have new plexy. I have an original but unmounted difference is less obvious..

Thank you for your comments.

Regarding the Omega symbol: your assumption of it being laser etched is wrong - it was applied thermically ( kind of a heated "stamp")

Interesting point, thank you !

Is it 'stamped' inside or outside the crystal in your opinion ?

As long as I've checked you can't feel any irregularity in the inner and outer side of the surface of the crystal. Why I ask.. !

The logo is on the inner side - hence does not disappear when you polish the crystal.

It is so faint that you hardly ever feel it when you go over it with your finger...
