Any help identifying these RAF and test pilot watches from the sixties will be much appreciated.
The watches are mostly stills taken from the Look at Life Documentary series.
Having put a post-up on V bombers this time I am focusing on the cold war support fighters.
The frightening lightning is still a very iconic aircraft with both single and two seat versions.
Twice the height of Everest in just three minutes shows the amazing climb rate with a Mach 2.0 supersonic top speed. Variants of the aircraft stayed in service until 1988.
Apollo Astronaut and USAF Pilot / test pilot Deke Slayton said the Lightning was his favourite all time plane, so the performance must have been impressive.

A very special aircraft – but can anyone help get an ID on these watches / any help much appreciated……….

Set 2 are key ones for me to try and ID (set three is one watch and would be a bonus).

A member of the family recalls playing with the stop watch in in set 3. The test pilot was using a thigh mounted scroll pad and stop watch to follow plans and make notes. The stop watch can also be operated one handed. I wonder if it is a Heuer? In later years a voice activated time stamped memo system was used in the aircraft. With jets the time you take to press a chrono might be too long... if I say eject eject do not say what as you will be talking to yourself :0) I have seen examples of watches used for flight plans, fuel management checks, navigation etc at this time although radio and radar were taking the lead more and more at those speeds. In the cockpit for jet fighters it was often just a quick visual wrist time check. I think the test pilots had about 86 instruments and the fuel burn was crazy fast - so plenty to keep them busy.

Set 2.
.

A small weekend bump. It would help me with some research to get a firm ID on the black face ejector seat wrist watch and knee pad stop watch. I am due (all fingers crossed) to get access to some declassified training films which may solve it ... but that is some months away. Thanks in advance team OF.

Don't know about the watch, but the ejection seat is a Martin Baker Mk4. Serviced many and flown in a few over the years.

Hopefully you never had to use it. The guy in the photo did once and needed recovery from the Irish Sea after his tail dropped off at Mach 2
The seats clearly did a good job (although the last but one green house helped cushion the fall a bit more in the photos below :0)

Given that IWC made Mk11 watches for RAF pilots between 1948 and 1982, I'm surprised that not one of these pics has one in sight. Top photo in set one maybe? I'm just guessing here.

These are all from the sixties - it is luck of the draw which watches get caught on camera. In later life I know one of these pilots used Seiko which did have an RAF link (I don’t know yet if his were service issue or private purchase)

🤔
Simple time only watches met the need for pilots...
The white dial watches are probably RAF 6B/159 Military Pilot’s watches by Omega & Longines as issued by the Air Ministry in 1950s & 1960s
Remember that for NASA astronauts explitcitly a chronograph was requested and soon astronauts' feedback begged for a practical bezel 😗

@SpeedyPhill Yes I think that is a 6B/159 in the first set - I really need someone to have a crack at naming the black dialled watch on the brown leather strap (two pictures in set 2). If someone can assist / best guess that will speed up some research for me....

Everyones favourite watch brand Bremont have the Martin Baker series 1,2 & 3 but only people with document ejections can purchase an MB1 series, the rest of the plebs get a 2 or 3 series from what I understand.

My favourite story is a retiring engineer who was sent on a first experience ‘fun’ flight in a Rafale fighter jet. It pulled positive G. He panicked and grabbed something as he felt he was falling out..... it was the ejection handle....he was ejected and came down in one piece, which is a tribute to the Martin Baker design (untrained older guy) The system did not bang the pilot out, so the aircraft was also saved. One way to get a limited edition piece.......
