For a bit of fun, I offer the following challenge:

    What year was this introduced?

Of course the part has to be identified in order to answer the query.

    Sorry, no prizes.
This is a ‘vintage’ query – not for ‘Speedies’.
If you think you know, perhaps PM me in order to keep it running for others.

But the strange thing is, I think I know who’s going to tell me.
    Tom

Eye of Sauron. The Hobbit was published in 1937 but I'm not expert of Tolkien's bibliography. ;)

Sorry but no! There may be magic in this piece but it’s real Omega hardware, no item of fiction.

It's a miniaturized Masonic symbol, used as a tie pin for Ken when he takes Barbie to a fancy restaurant!

    ..... no, wait...... that's not it. :(

I got it! It's the part of a model of that thing Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) had to turn to escape the underground vault in National Treasure! ::psy::

.....ah, that's not it either.

    Nevermind.

Shape reminds me of a rotor from an old Mazda Wankel engine, but that's not my official guess ;)

Is that how Mazda solve the apex seal problem on the Wankels? Using synthetic rubies?

Maybe if Mazda ever produces their long-rumored RX-7 successor, it'll be stamped "21 RUBIS" on the hood?

The RX-8 was the successor to the RX-7. Until the problem with emissions can be solved I don't think they will introduce any new rotary engines any time soon.
