Questions About a Ruper 20x Eye Loupe and it’s Lenses

Hello. Thank you all for letting me join your forum, and I apologize in advance for the mildly OT post. I found via Google that there are some folks here who know their optics (eye loupes). I’m not a watch collector, but a mechanic. I purchased a machinist’s tool box at an estate sale over the weekend, and in it I found a Ruper 20x eye loupe in very poor condition, yet I can’t help but appreciate it and it’s quality construction.

Beyond just being well-worn, one of the lenses is broken. I measured the good lens at a hair under 14mm, and the thickness is about 1.63mm. The good lens is almost flat on one side and slightly convex on the other. I would really like to find a pair of replacement lenses and fix this loupe. I know it’s not worth much, but I don’t have another one, and whenever I buy something at an estate sale, I sort of like to honor the previous owner by making sure their stuff lives on.

Can anybody point me towards a place where I might be able to find some lenses for this thing? And maybe give me some pointers so I don’t buy the wrong thing?

I’d like to keep it 20x magnification, just because that is how it’s marked. I’m assuming I have to replace both lenses to keep the optical clarity? Would the convex sides face in, or out, or stacked, or…?

Thank You!

If you are trying to save the case and look for sentimental reasons, given that similar Ruper loupes are relatively inexpensive, maybe best to look for one with the same lens diameter and transplant the optics? That's an old loupe and I can't find the same one available, so it may be challenging to find the same diameter and strength from the same maker. This one is the closest candidate I could find: https://www.hilkinson.co.uk/product/hilkinson-pocket-magnifier-achromatic-14mm-20x-magnification/. Good luck.

If you decide to go down the path of a new loupe, you have many choices, including Hilkinson/Ruper, well-known brands like Zeiss or Bausch & Lomb, or inexpensive Chinese makes. I am not an expert, but like the quality/price of BelOMO.

Thank you! I reached out to Hilkinson and asked about ordering a replacement lens, but they do not sell the glass separately. I’ll keep the idea of purchasing that loupe in my back pocket as an option to repair this one, but I’ll probably just hope to come upon another one of these Ruper’s in similar shape and use it for parts. It actually works good enough for my use-case with a broken lens (if you look through it the way you would a bifocal). I’m just looking at spark plugs and engine parts.

Thanks Again!

I would gladly defer to others on this forum who are infinitely more knowledgeable than I, but if you're looking to use a new loupe for parts, you may want to try Esslinger. For watch tools, I've found them in the past to carry a wide product range and various prices. Good luck!
