Question on Omega SMP PO 39.5mm case replacement

Hey guys,

Would like to know if I can get my PO case replaced instead of polishing? Would also like to ask if the serviced case is brand new from the factory and not a refurbished one?

I understand that the service won't be cheap but I'm willing to consider.

Thank you!

Cheers,
E

if you would put up the money for it and request a new case Omega would certainly oblige IMHO.

Yes, you can get a new mid-case.

But I have no idea why you'd want to do this.

Planet Ocean cases can be refinished to factory-like condition by the right people with the right equipment.

These cases have serial numbers etched on them, so I'd expect this kind of replacement to be somewhat bespoke and only executed by Omega in Switzerland.

Yes, Omega can replace your case at service, and it will be a brand new case.

They will transfer the serial number to the new case, and you will not get the old case back.

This can also b done via an Omega certified watchmaker.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I understand that polishing can be done during service but my watch isn't up for service yet and there are multiple scratches from people who changed my strap including some deep ones.

It just doesn't sit right with me and I'd rather not polish because of how new it is.

My watch is currently at the certified Omega service center where I live, sent it in because I think it's running a little too fast so I was thinking to get a new case while it's there

Sounds crazy to get a new case but this has been bugging me for a few months and I'd rather not polish so quickly as it removes material.

Cheers,
E

Will the Planet Ocean engraving be on the case back as well? (like the original)

Are you also going to request a new caseback, midcase is sufficient isn't it?

I think reading your previous post you're better off selling this and buying a new one.

Out of interest Al, what’s the ballpark cost for a new case? I had one laser welded and repolished a few years ago but wonder if a new case, especially when it doesn’t have any real sentimental value might have been an option.

A 1861 case was 2k so curious to see how much difference there is for a PO:

This isn't a vintage Rolex. I would not worry about loss of material. Omega lugs are relatively thick and if the person doing the refinishing knows what they're doing, you wouldn't even know anything had been done other than it looking new.

The only option on the vast majority of Omegas is to buy the entire case.

It will be a complete new case, the same as the old case.

I just want to change the stainless steel case and the outer ring of the case back with the PO name engraved on.

I don't want to have the crystals on both the front and case back changed. No need to change the bezel as well

We know. As above, that will likely cost in the region of $2,300 for the part. Probably more like $3,000 after the compulsory service is included.

Still think it's a good idea?

If you have deep gouges or big dings, as noted above, laser welding before refinishing can help to reduce the amount of material that needs to be removed to achieve a perfect finish. Unfortunately the official channels wont provide this service, they will only fit a new part so you are limited to third parties. Some Omega Authorised Repair Centres such as Swiss Time Services (UK) do offer this. There are other options elsewhere in the world too.

Oh wow, ok that's too much.

Thank you for the advice. I'll see if I can look for other options
