Question about Eterna 1422UD date function

I picked up a Kontiki yesterday and checked everything on the watch before buying except for the quickset date. It wasn't until this morning I that I tried it by pulling the crown out only to see it does not work.

It was a Kijiji buy and the seller made it clear a return isn't happening.

The date changes over at night as it should.

My question is can this be fixed or once the mechanism is broken is that it?

According to the Ranfft movement archive, advancing the calendar is done by repeatedly pulling the crown outward, past the hand setting position, pushing it back in, then doing it again. Is that what you are doing? If the calendar doesn't advance, in answer to your question, it can be repaired. Are you going to try it yourself?

Hi Canuck, thanks for your reply.

Yes I'm pulling out the crown to the second position and the date doesn't advance as it does with my 1488K movement.

I won't try the repair myself as I'm not that proficient in watch repair but if it can be repaired then I would send it to my watchmaker Shane Ede for a servicing.

Do you know if parts are readily available or should I look for a parts movement? I know you can't assess the movement without seeing it but with your experience in watch repair I'm hoping to get an experienced opinion.

This Eterna movement is a basic ETA caliber (number eludes me), so parts will be available. But i'll bet your watchmaker may even have a movement he can cannibalize. Failing that, it would be better to buy just the required parts rather that to go to the expense of buying a donor movement.

No one can tell you specifically what is wrong with this - at least I can't as my crystal ball is out for calibration. Can it be fixed? Likely, but no one knows the scope until it's apart. The only way to know for sure is to take it to a watchmaker and have them look into it.
