"He later gifted it to Georgy Permyakov, a fluent Mandarin speaker who served as his tutor and Russian translator during his time in detention."

Questionable circumstances to receive a gift from someone imprisoned?

I think Emperor Puyi had a very sad life, kicked from one sad circumstance to the next, a pawn in other people's games, truly tragic figure but his lot could have been worse I suppose when you looked at the outcomes for other deposed institutional monarchs in that time frame.

I’ve read he wasn’t as benevolent as Hollywood portrayed him but it difficult to judge historical characters through modern eyes.
That is a beautiful moonphase regardless and from an interesting time in history, i find it difficult to think that the guards at the gulag wouldn’t have snatched it but what do I know I wasn’t there

I haven't read a book on the matter, but the Wikipedia summary of his life is simply bananas. 😲
