    Hi OF,

Got this photograph from a friend asking me if I have ever seen this :

    84D44E0D-5B5A-4534-A743-C75505F01644.jpeg

No single clue about what it could be on my side.

He allowed me to share the photograph here, maybe somebody here has some inputs to share?

    Many thanks in advance :)

+1 on the cal. 1040. Case style does look like a 176.001 Seamaster. Hour and minute hands don't look like anything in AJTT under the section featuring cal. 1040 watches. But the hand with the orange tip, albeit different from the "regular" hand often seen with 176.007 watches, is featured in AJTT (page 550).

What strikes me as particularly odd is the lack of an omega symbol above the omega script on the dial.

Have a go at http://www.old-omegas.com/ and browse through the old catalogues, I'd say anything from 1969 onwards, maybe it's featured in one of the catalogues, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Hope that helped,

    Max ;).

    Edit: regarding prototype or Franken:
The 45 in a circle looks off, also as above, no script st all and no omega logo above the Omega inscription? Plus have a look at the 6 o clock subdial, overprint with the 35/25 numbers. I don't think omega would've been that sloppy even with a prototype. But I' no expert.

There is a chance it’s a spec dial... looks to good for a redial but obviously not a production dial.

They have been better described on the Rolex side, and you have to assume they exist on the Omega side. This ones going to go down as never known I guess.

Spec dial: singer or other dial makers sent designs to Rolex and Omega for them to choose from or as base ideas for new watch dials.

Interesting read with full verification here.

The watch is the relatively uncommon 176.001. My instinct tells me the dial is a redial, (or wholly invented dial) for a number of reasons, most of which have been pointed out by @Speedmasterfan88 and @ICONO . It just doesn't achieve the level of quality and consistency that other dials of the era did.

BUT, I do think that @Foo2rama could be correct that it might have been a spec dial, based on the post by @Tom Dick in this thread last summer where we discussed this very dial. He knew someone with the same dial, and I trust @Tom Dick 's opinion too...

I've been through all the old catalogs on that site and this dial is not featured in any of them! But Omega did make 28 or so legitimate dials for this watch family in only about 4 years, and only 16 of those dials show up in catalogs. So that doesn't automatically rule this dial out. But the overall quality gives me pause... So prototype to me is almost certainly the wrong word. And if it is indeed a spec dial I think it is a very rough one...

    Here's a pic of my 176.001:

To me, the most blatant error on the OP dial is the placement of the 25 and 35 numerals. In no other 1040/1041 dial do these numerals end up on the 6:00 subdial. This page shows thumbnails that can be expanded with photos of all of the (IMO) legitimate dials that Omega either used as prototypes for marketing materials or actually left the factory on watches for sale. I just don't get the feeling that the OP dial was meant to be seen by the public, if it even was created by Singer or another dial manufacturer.

Small note 4 of these dials exist in pictures. Notice all are different dial colors? Same perfect minute tracks...

I don't know if I'd call the minute tracks perfect, minutes 14 and 16 extend into the box around the date window; in the legitimate dials the 14 through 16 marks are all shortened. I suppose one could argue that this could be an intentional design flourish intended to distinguish it from the other dial styles, but the end result looks sloppy to me. Otherwise, yes the minute tracks are well executed.

Looks a lot like a (badly repainted) set of hands from a Tissot Navigator cal. 1340:

This dial is increasingly looking like an ‘Artesia’ special……
