What a beauty, but I think the crown should look a bit different - turbine style similar to this:

You might be correct. This crown is a vintage part but not of the same era of production. It is probably a service replacement leftover.

I quote from the alpha hand website : "The third crown commonly seen is the “inverted star”, a logo Zenith introduced in 1973. This square logo did not overlap with production of the Zenith A386, so these crowns are not original to the watch."

I was also impressed with the parts availability.
I dont know if both the dial and hands are tritium. They still glow but don’t last very long.

My first thoughts when I saw your post was that the hourmarkers look tritium, hands are very white so those could be SL but I could be wrong.

The Dial has a “- T” … I’m amazed and delighted, if that is the replacement dial provided by Zenith. Either NOS part, or modern replacement printed to match original.

That is definitely not an original NOS dial. Missing serifs.
Other than that it's still nice!

Hello,

I just bought a zenith A386 mark 2 in a pity shape.
I had in mind to send it to zenith to get it back to its former glory. This thread will be my logbook of the project.

This website is probably the main source of information regarding vintage a386 : https://alphahands.com/vintage-watch-research/zenith-a386-el-primero/

I am curious of what Zenith can do in terms of parts especially. This watch needs a couple of them.
I don't think the dial is savable. The crown and pushers are wrong. The chronograph second hand isn't correct as well. Finally, the last bad surprise is the rotor which is a movado part not a zenith one. I was afraid that the whole movement was a replacement movado but, after checking the markings, the rest is from Zenith 👍

A couple of positive points:
The watch is in running order : all functions work (chronograph functions, time and date setting).
The watch comes with its original bracelet with little stretch.
The case is well preserved and defined.

Here are the photos :
Great looking watch

What a great log of this horological adventure. To be honest, I quite liked the patinated dial. You don’t see them often with an original, patinated dial because they get swapped out by most. But great you got to keep all parts! Enjoy wearing it!

Shouldn't be that hard to calculate if you have a straight front picture of a watch with a guaranteed original one..
