·The thinking on the wife part is correct, but the Speedmaster isn't the only watch that's had minute variations over the decades it's been out. The Rolex Submariner and GMT come to mind immediately. The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is another, and so is the UG Polerouter. IWC's caliber 89 references have also had anywhere from small differences to wholesale changes in the case & dial styles over the years.
Minute variations in a continued product range in my opinion is what makes a brand great and gives it credibility and desirability. The Submariner, GMT and Speedmaster Man on the Moon have this no doubt about It.
