Picking up another pre-moon speedmaster. It has the stepdial, but also has a dent on the bezel around 12 oclock. Inner caseback and serial point to 1969 year. Awaiting service before I can wear it. The band is badly worn, this may be a leather strap watch, or a keep it in the safe until a later date... How bad is that dent at 12 o'clock? I understand that it's not a .90 bezel insert
Yep, that is what I was getting at although you’re right, probably why it’s being serviced in the first place.
dent isn't so bad. probably wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out... depends on what you're after. do you plan to wear or stuff in a safe?
It's one of these thoughts for me, "wait for another pre-moon to show up in my circle of collectors/friends, or get this one and enjoy the pre-moon as it is." I'll probably wear it very little, but I like the watch nevertheless...
Yes, endlinks unknown and the stretch in the bracelet is really significant. Perhaps a bracelet rebuild down the road is in order.
Early 30 million serial..., which I believe puts it in the 1969-1970 date range. Inner caseback shows 1969. I believe the bezel is correct for this year, but I’ll defer to the experts here..
Still not enough information about the serial number, but it doesn't sound good so far. An "early 30 million" (before 30,588,XXX) serial number should have DON. So if your serial is before that, the bezel has been swapped out. This can be corrected, obviously - at a price. Separate issue, but you can get a good delivery date estimate on ilovemyspeedmaster.com. Any 30M serial will put an extract date well into 1970.
I double checked: it’s a 30,994,xxx. Man, I really like this forum. So much more information than I expected. Thanks
I have a few noobie questions. I believe 220 bezel means the number 220 is visible versus the typical 225 insert. Does DON mean dot on the number, meaning the dot on top of the ninety....? My watch does not have the dot on top of the ninety...it's to the side... thanks,
Correct, few bezels were made with the incorrect 220 graduation. DON = Dot Next to Ninety DNN = Dot Next to Ninety
