nothing. Philippine Stahl is The world renowned Rolex expert. He researched this. Go do your homework.
He met with the families and much more.
I have spoken with Philip about this personally. I accept his research and his finding. Go read up and make up your own minds.

My research indicates you have more invested in this than I do.....

I know this is a very old thread but while looking up some old everest photos this link came up on google:
https://www.outdoorjournal.com/feat...verest-in-1953-putting-a-controversy-to-rest/

If you scroll to the bottom there's a pretty robust letter from the then managing director of Smiths (in response to a Rolex advert claiming that Rolex made it to the summit) that the only two watches worn by the two summiters were both Smiths.
It is answered by the then managing director of Rolex UK admitting that this is true.
So my original thought that Tenzing wore a Rolex is shot down .

As already mentioned in other topics, as a young man I was fascinated by the 1953 Mount Everest expedition...
40 years later I have only reached the summits of three 4000 m plus high mountains, Mt Blanc (4800) & Mt Karisimbi (4500) among the highest...
A few interesting points on the 1953 Everest "conquest":
There're no photos of Edmund Hillary on the top of Mount Everest, as he didn't gave the photo-camera to Tenzing after he had photographed the young sherpa who in fact had his 39th birthday ! Hillary photographed all slopes from the top...
Rolex (& Smiths) did sponsor the John Hunt British expedition and wanted to check the bubbleback watches after return from the Himalayas
Edmund Hillary stated he left his Rolex in the camp while Tenzing Norgay also received a Rolex 6098 bubbleback... time-period photos show the cream dial watch without numbers, not even a 3, 6, 9 configuration on the dial... just plain markers
.

👎
There're a few good color photos of the expedition, showing the mountaineers wearing cream dial watches... the best photo shows English climber Tom Bourdillon at the south summit with his cream-dial watch on his lefthand wrist !
.

.
Edit: video added which wrongly shows a Rolex at 1:33

Is the 6298 case also 36mm in diameter?

It is in fact 36mm diameter.
20mm lug width. Long lugs.
And there are some 6298 with the word Explorer on them despite common knowledge.

In my opinion, those published in this post are all wonderful pieces and it doesn't matter whether they went to Everest or not
