Once again, I object to "beater". I have a couple that could withstand a high-risk environment, but I am not afraid to wear anything I have for most daily activities. Most of what I have is not irreperable if it accidentally gets knocked about, either. When I got T-boned by a speeder at an uncontrolled intersection, the car was done for but I don't even remember what watch I was wearing, because it survived intact.

I feel that part of the reason we collect watches is because they each serve a different purpose in our lives. Whether it’s related to a particular activity or even our wardrobe choice. When I’m rock climbing, I’m not going to wear my Rolex Explorer, because I would likely mangle it. But I would wear my G-Shock. Even more pedestrian activities like cleaning out the garage or basement don’t warrant my Planet Ocean just waiting for me to bang it something. But, my Momentum Atlas fits the role perfectly. So there is often a watch for every occasion. Maybe the term “beater” isn’t the best, but by definition it is in fact what we do to them.

I think most of my collection are beaters these days as I spend less on them than I used to, but this is still my favourite beater that had served me well for a few years now.

Oh lighten up...it’s not like I’m Sean Connery or anything.

Like you wish you could take her. Someone's getting a beating and it ain't her!

I don't know why I bought this 15 years ago but it has served its purpose admirably, faultless in that time . Worn everyday in a trucking evironment and hardly a mark ! The alarm feature was very useful.

Thanks for your response.

I would never change my watch just for cleaning out the garage, and I'm kind of clumsy, too. I'd wear any of them to shoot, even with a pistol in my left hand. I might draw the line at jackhammer, but literally the only reason I would change my watch is for a practical reason like I wanted the lume or I was worried it would get stolen.

But I am a typical city boy, never was athletic, and sports are what I did on the weekend in the backyard with the other boys.

Lots of positive connotations with the moniker “beater”. Something familiar, trusted, and dependable.

This is my travel watch - sitting patiently in the watch box at the moment, waiting for travel to resume. This is the one I would not hesitate to wear in virtually any situation.

This is my daily beater. I've been trying to kill it for the last year or so but no dice...just keeps on keepin' on...

I am firmly moving to the camp that an attractive and well-made watch with an NH35 from Seiko or one of the better Miyotas is a very good choice, and if that's the only mechanical watch you ever buy... you're ahead of the game.

I just picked up the Swatch a couple months ago and it's now my around the house watch in Covid times. Honestly I'm a little annoyed with how loud the thing ticks though. It doesn't bother me but it bothers my Wife who then bothers me about it. The Vostoks I've had for a few years and are my go-to vacation / beach / scuba / pool / anything watch.

Women hear very much better than men do, on average.

Interestingly enough, they are less interested in high end audio, because they don't care. 😁

Vostok are nice, inexpensive watches... and if you have a good watchmaker, she can adjust your Amphibian to keep COSC standards.

When I hear the term “ beater “ in discussing a watch... I think of a watch that I won’t mind if it gets beat up, others think of their usual daily wear, their beater.

I had/have two beaters, the Casio Pathfinder I wore when working on the car, the house, the yard, etc. The Seiko I wore for travel abroad. The Casio has needed a new battery for quite some time and the Seiko 6105 diver... is no longer in the beater category due to its increased collectibility and value.

My once and current beaters....

Nice 6105!

This quartz Lorus has been my beater watch the last few months. Picked it up from a street vendor in Dar es Salaam for the equivalent of US$ 20. Even came with a too small two-part NATO strap...which actually suits it fairly well, so I left it on.
