Polerouter with black dials: white print vs gilt

Hi all,

I've been wondering about the black dials on Polerouters. Some seem to have their text in white print (on top of the black dial) others seem to be gilt (note: I refer to the galvanic process where basically the text is actually just the absence of black -- in other words: no print at all).

At least on my own Polerouter H 20217-1, I'm convinced that it's a "true" gilt dial (not just golden-ish print). Under the microscope, I'm pretty sure that the text is not printed, but the metal dial surrounded by black.

But I've also looked at other 20217's and some seem to have their text printed.

Can anyone enlighten me? Did UG produce dials with identical designs in two different methods at the same time (i.e. 20217 production period)? Or am I making this up and they're always gilt? Or when did they change from gilt to print?

My gilt dial

A white printed dial? Or am I wrong?

Seems like a question for @CafeRacer

I've seen both, however most steel polerouters I've seen had white print which leads me to suspect that the gilt dials belong to gold cases and the dial had been swapped at some point. Total speculation though

I recently received and am enjoying the Polerouter book. That's my recommended starting point for a question like this.

Oh I'd love to have that book!

If you see the answer, it would be kind of you to share it here.

I hope that's not the case :-/

It's simply the aging of the transparent protective layer, in some cases it "tropicalizes" giving the overall look a "gold" effect.

My understanding is that they are all printed and not true "gilt", but some examples definitely looks like it so Im not 100% convinced they are all the same. Are you able to take better macro photos of your dial? Closer up and better quality?

This example definitely looks like it:

and are some other examples I saved when looking at it a few years ago (not just 20217)

And my old Polarouter that made me think about it in the first place where it looks like Universal Geneve is sunken and Polarouter printed on top.

@Knebo - The book is fascinating and beautiful and full of all sorts of info from UGs archives.

From the chapter on Bumper Polerouters at pp84-86, H20217/4 described as "gilt crosshair, text and minute markers". The extract from the production records (which this book is full of, pure gold) notes your handset.

Hope this assists!

Thank you all for your responses!

@G___ thanks a lot for looking that up. I still wonder, though if "gilt" is used simply as in "golden" or truly with respect to the galvanic process.

I will eventually service my Polerouter. Maybe still this month otherwise in April. When the dial is under my microscope, and not under the crystal, I'll be able to tell for sure and will share here, of course.

Galvanized

Interesting! And very beautiful patina. Which reference is that?

Are you able to take better macro photos of your dial? Closer up and better quality?
Soon!

Interesting topic. I own a heavily patinized version of the 206515 "pre-polerouter".
I always assumed that the yellow text was painted on top, but now I'm not so sure anymore. Could just as well be yellowed lacquer and "transparent" text like Vujen describes.

Very cool, we'll look forward to that update in due course.

(Making me jealous of the watchmaking microscope ... Just need to find the space)
