PO Mk1 servicing observations

Got my PO 2500C a month or so ago from OMEGA servicing, and two observations I'd like to ask about, bearing in mind this watch I've had for 15 years has never done this before.

Firstly, the rotor sounds when it moves. NEVER had that in 15 years.

Secondly, when it's given a shake, the adjust on wrist for comfort shake, not any ferocious shaking, it gains a few seconds. What's that all about? It's NEVER done that either.

I remember the old cheap Seikos would gain a few seconds when you shook them, but it's never happened on this PO since I've had it, until this last recent service.

Neither of these happen on my PO 8500, obviously. I tried shaking that, for the hell of it. Doesn't budge a second.

I will say that the timekeeping is pretty decent though, and no surprise, runs few seconds faster which is fine.

I used to know a drummer who played with a Submariner, and needless to say, had he had this on, he'd be several hours ahead by end of set. Surely it can't be right?

Time for service.

Its like saying no need for an oil change as my car is running fine at 2-3 times the recommended oil change interval.

a watch service and in this case from someone with an omega parts account as it is co axial, is mostly to re lube the friction points.

Deffo needs to go back. Simple as.

It's actually running fine, (if you don't shake it) but I would like to know why it's doing what it's doing.

Why is it making that noise after 15 years of not doing it, and why does shaking it add a few seconds.
It had been serviced before by them several years ago and did neither.

After a 5 months wait for service, reluctant to send back, obvs.

Omega will presumably have returned the watch with a list of work done during the service and any replaced parts: any clues there?

If they replaced the rotor or rotor bearings, that might explain why you can now hear the rotation. Some movements are noisier than others. It is a trait and not necessarily a fault. Any 7750 movement based watch for instance usually has a very lumpy noisy rotor movement feel/sound. The 2500 being ultimately 2892 based is usually quiet but not silent in my experience. The noise wouldn't worry me, but the gaining time would and it is worthy of a fix under warranty.

Good point, I did get some parts, not much if I remember correctly, and don't remember any paperwork though. I'll check that out when home.

Thanks, I've never heard anyone mention the PO making that noise before, any of the older models, and obviously a new one on me too. Ironically, a lot of the newer ones I hear people moaning about rotor, ie the NTTD. Be good to hear an explanation from OMEGA about why the shake is gaining time. I'm sure they will have an answer for it? Is that the norm changing the rotor/bearings.

Honestly, irregardless of brand or identity of the servicing agent I'd expect it to run more smoothly and more quietly after service. I'd stick me neck out and suggest that the rotor of any auto should be quieter with new bearings and lubrication.

The fact the rotor is noisier and the seconds hand jumps by a few seconds with a gentle shake indicates something is wrong with the watch. Send it back now, because neither of those is correct. That's what the warranty for the service is for. Someone either missed something, or something came lose after they tested it. Don't worry about what it is -- that's what the watchmakers at Omega need to figure out.

Thanks people, you're right of course.
I did contact them after a few days with it, and they said, keep an eye on it and if there's a problem with it let us know and if you want to send back.... So as it was running OK, I didn't bother. But it's a niggle

These are all case parts. Was there another set of movement parts?

Hey Archer, absolutely nothing else, that's the whole of the contents I received after the full service.

Out of interest… should you need to wind the 2500C before you take it off, to expect it to be running just 24 hours later, IF you’ve been wearing it non-stop for 2 weeks? I went one day wearing another watch, and then went back to it today and it’d stopped half hour before I picked it up. If consistently wearing for weeks, should it still need winding? Thought that was odd.

They should have sent you the replaced movement parts - there would have been a barrel complete with mainspring at the least.

No, the watch shouldn't stop under the conditions you describe.

I didn't get anything back at all the prior service, but that was via the dealer I'd bought it from and they sent it back to OMEGA,
This time I sent it myself directly. I doubt they'll surrender anything to me now, and would assume it's gone. This just gets better....
