Ploprof - vintage 166.0077 questions

Hi, I’ve had a number of ploprof 1200’s over the years and still own one. I am however looking for a 70’s vintage one now and there really aren’t that many about, especially here in the UK. I can count on one hand the number for sale. In fact there is just one on Chrono24 at £7350

I have one in my sights from a dealer though so have a few questions please. I have read the omega Ploprof and the Ploprof pages so feel fairly well informed from there but keen to get the views from here.

It looks to have a new luminova dial, new hands, possibly glass, and I would say from the condition the case is also newish. I have no idea on the movement but I assume it’s a 1002, but I won’t be opening it up.

I’m probably in the minority but I don’t want to wear a very worn version with lost of patina and bubbling dial and flaky or missing lume so this one actually appeals a lot. (No offence to the patina fans)

so, how much do all the new bits hurt or help value, and what about the movement? It’s running well but I read lots of instances about 1002 movements in PloProfs being replaced. Without an archive extract I’m just taking a punt

Help me decide please, do I buy and where would you place value?

thank you

Oh, and when did vintage PloProfs become so hard to buy. I’ve been looking for 6 months now.

I assume it’s this one:

In which case, the dial is an original tritium one. Case looks good and probably original, rather than a new service one, although it’s hard to say from the handful of very poor photos wether it’s been refinished or not. The red button has been replaced with a new one, the strap is more modern, but genuine Omega and the box is, of course, not original to the watch (I doubt the lid would even close with the watch in it.) it looks like it might have had a service, given the little bag of old parts, although that’s not mentioned in the text.
As you’ve said, one of the big problems with these is the fact that many have had the original movements changed, so you’re definitely taking a gamble buying one without an extract. An extract would certainly add quite a bit of value to me, although that narrows the field of available examples even further.
I would ask for some better photos of the dial and case, also ask if they know the serial number and service history.
They’re a fantastic watch though so buy well and you’ll really enjoy it.

Yeah I’m sure you’re right Seaborg. Looks like case is pretty sharp too and the crystal. It also has a new strap on it and red button looks new. I suspect it’s had a full service, maybe even a ‘back to factory’ refurb.

Ah dash, the one I’ve posted above is less than £6k and from a dealer. That’s why i reckon it’s a fair price. Especially when you consider I want it to be a daily wearer so unstable flaky lume and a bubbling dial isnt really for me. I can see the appeal for sure of that vintage authenticity and no doubt its more collectible but for one to wear daily, is this a better buy?

I think that’s a decision only you can make in the end. Bear in mind that if you’re ever likely to sell in the future then it will always be harder to sell the one with service parts.

Yeah I know and I appreciate the advice here. What do you think on value given what the markets like. Is £6k on the money for that example or there abouts?

I think that you could find a better one with original parts in that price range 👍

Maybe you’re right Seaborg, but I’ve been looking for ages and they’re not out there. If anyone here has a 73 Ploprof with extract I’ve got good money for you. I think I’ll take this one to wear now to satisfy the urge and make my wrist pretty, and then take the long game on the dream - an all original 73.

The trouble with the example you’ve shown is that the only original part on it might be the bezel, i.e it could well be a complete put-together. Patience is usually rewarded in the end. But if you’re happy with that one go for it.

Well, I've bought a few months back a stunning double blue PloProf here (with extract !), in the private sales section from my friend @Dash1.
As Ash said, patience is the key. One will pop up some day 👍

As many of these have swapped movements not matching archive records, in an otherwise nice and all original exemplaire how much this would affect value in your opinion?

Got to ask, what’s a double blue please? And if it happens to be a 73 I’ll be very envious!

This is my double blue.

A double blue is a PloProf with an early dial with the unique Seamaster writting and both PROFESSIONAL and 600 added in blue ink.

Cheers
