Hi, guys. I have been a member here for about 7 months. I love watches, but would be the first to tell you I am an expert at nothing. Yesterday, my semi-retired watchmaker told me he had a customer bring him a "70's Speedmaster to be serviced.". In the meantime he purchased another watch and might sell the Speedmaster, would I want it for $900. I said for that money I believe I do. He just called me and told me he had the watch back in hand if I wanted to come see it I could. My first inclination is to buy it and run out of his shop giggling. Am I right? Can I go wrong for $900 for a serviced Speedy from the 70's? I know this is very vague info to go on, but it is all I have. I will tell you that my watchmaker, besides being in his 70's is old fashioned and I am sure if he serviced the watch, the case has been polished. I do not know if the original band is on it or not. I apologize again for how vague this question is, but would you buy it and do your research later? Thank you in advance for any help in the next hour or so. If I buy it, pics will follow this afternoon.

Go take a look at it and if it’s half decent, get it for that price. Look forward to your pics

With the little information you have, I'd make no assumptions. If you've been here months, you know the basics, sometimes if its too good to be true, it is. So, do your due diligence, if need be, take a couple quick snaps with your cell phone camera and post here for quick feedback. Good luck.

I feel like it will be a good watch. Let's hope the case wasn't polished too much.
I recently acquired a 105.003 from the first owner through a newish "dealer" who told me " the watch is very beautiful, it was a bit scratched so I cleaned it a bit / when you say cleaned, do you mean polished ?? / Yes. / ::facepalm1:: "

Let us know as soon as you have info 😉

As long as it's a Professional and not a Mark II or 125 etc, $900 is probably a good pickup - chances are even if it's been through the Omega service ringer it'll still have more value in parts.

I am starting to get concerned it will be a Mark II. Jumping into the truck, thanks for all your replies so far. Will update here again before walking in to see the watch. Thanks again, guys.

900$ for a nice-ish Mk2 would still be a solid buy if you like the model

Here are the pics. It has been polished. I believe the band is original, but there is no bezel......which I think there should be. The serial number is 29.1 million. So, early in 1969? No 1st watch on the moon on case back. No Omega etched on the crystal, but think the crown is correct. It has an 861 movement and 516 on the band between the lugs and says 1039 on the buckle, in my watchmaker's words.

Buy it and run!

The band and endlinks are worth more than 1000 USD !

Have you opened the back yet? I'll wager a -71.

EDIT - actually, if your serial is a 29, then you may have a service dial, but either way, a bargain buy.

Buy the sh*t outta that

2911 serial is mid-1970, and requires a DON bezel. However, you could spend $5000 on a DON bezel and still have a great deal on your hands. The 1039 / 516 bracelet is worth $1-1.5k alone

My thought would be to sell the bracelet put a service bezel on it and a nice leather strap, and you should come out at zero cost !

Great find. All you really need is a bezel and some minor case restoration (brushed finish on the inside of the lugs). I suppose 29M is probably still DON.

Thanks for the advice. Just stepped out to post the pics. Will go back in and buy it in a few minutes. Can anyone tell me how much for a bezel, correct or service.....providing the dial is already service. Thank you all again for the help. This forum is awesome!

Why do you say the dial is service? Looks like a step dial to me.

That is not a service dial, that's an original stepped dial.

Bezel (DON), depends. A very nice one will be $5,000; lesser quality will come down from there. Service bezels are $100 or less

Service bezel = negligible. Correct bezel = $4k-$5k.
